The Hidden Genius Project trains and mentors Black male youth in technology creation, entrepreneurship, and leadership skills to transform their lives and communities.

POSITION PURPOSE AND SUMMARY:
The Senior Innovation Educator within The Hidden Genius Project is the consummate role for the educator with a creative and entrepreneurial spirit, and an unflinching belief in the potential of black male youth. This person is the fundamental driver of student programming activities, including in the Immersion Program classroom, as well as in other shorter-term programming components. Hence, they are primarily responsible for implementing the technical curriculum, including problem-solving, computer science, programming, and software design. Additionally, they coordinate and oversee a team to teach the entrepreneurship and leadership components. It is vital that they continually exercise ingenuity, enthusiasm, and a deep commitment to continual learning within an exciting startup environment. Finally, this will be an anchor role for our Los Angeles site, as we continue our journey toward serving more young people in more communities.
MAJOR AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY:

• Core Instruction – Teach core curricular concepts (i.e. technology, entrepreneurship, and leadership) to Immersion cohort during summer and school-year sessions. Coordinate volunteers and lead educational activities within Catalyst programming.
• Mentorship and Positive Student Experience – Develop rich one-to-one connections with Immersion participants. Through mentorship relationships, identify holistic participant needs as they arise, and strategize with The Hidden Genius Project staff to develop a plan to address them. Solicit participant and parent/guardian feedback to guide responsive programmatic improvements to maximize participant enjoyment and success.
• Training, Technical Assistance, and Facilitation – Train The Hidden Genius Project staff and volunteers on relevant content and methods. Engage relevant external stakeholders to assess capacity and needs towards implementing effective technology education models. Collaborate in designing strategies to scale impact and/or support systems-level implementation. Facilitate training and/or convenings for adults interested in providing technology education. Train volunteers to support classroom and Catalyst activities, and manage them within those settings.
• Model Leadership—Provide positive and optimistic leadership and problem solving in alignment with The Hidden Genius Project’s values., both in partnership with other staff team members, as well as alongside young people.
• Mentorship and Positive Student Experience—Provide healthy one-to-one support and mentorship to program participants. As needed, collaborate with The Hidden Genius Project staff to develop strategies and identify strategies necessary to address student needs.
• Curriculum Adaptation—Partner with The Hidden Genius Project instructional leadership to adapt and refine core curricula to meet the needs of the local site.
• Data Collection and Reporting—Partner with The Hidden Genius Project leadership to implement core data collection processes to support organizational learning and quality assurance.
• Other Duties as Assigned by Leadership—Work on other short-term and long-term projects as the need arises.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Required

• Strong work ethic and passionate commitment to the wellbeing of young people
• Experience working and communicating effectively with black male youth, underrepresented youth, and/or low-income youth
• Experience teaching or studying computer science, and/or programming languages, i.e. HTML, JavaScript, CSS, SQL, Python, etc.
• Strong cultural competence and commitment to asset-based youth development strategies
• Ability to receive feedback and engage in continuous self-improvement
• Commitment to continual professional development and collaborative learning
• Three-plus years’ experience teaching adolescent young people

ROLE OVERVIEW:

• Role Location: Los Angeles, CA
• Reports to: Curriculum Lead (based in Oakland, CA)
• Status: Exempt
• Schedule: Full Time (minimum 40 hours per week)
• Additional requirements: must travel to Oakland, CA for multiple days at a time (totaling up to 2-4 weeks on aggregate) between January and March 2020 to engage in immersive training

Pay: $60,948.00 – $90,000.00 per year
