JOB FUNCTION
Provide leadership and technical guidance to optimize the performance of all plant equipment through the execution and implementation of maintenance and continuous improvement programs/projects. This position supervises mechanics, electricians (Agincourt), line technicians and cleaning room operators on their respective shift. Train and develop craft skills of technicians and operators. Assist in the development and implementation of long term strategies and solutions aimed at resolving technical problems, while providing a high level of service and support to the department’s internal customers. Support other areas of the business across the Canadian Operations as required/assigned.
Key Roles/Responsibilities
1. Leadership
Coordinate and assign technical resources and establish priorities based on operational and business needs.
Monitor work environment for compliance with cGMP’s, safety and housekeeping guidelines as required by SOPs.
Monitor and assist development of technicians to improve craft skills and personal development through the identification of training requirements, development of training materials/matrices and conducting of training sessions for technicians, operators and other staff.
Create an environment in which employees share knowledge and learnings with a positive regard for the needs and experience of others.
Communicate across all shifts any issues, root causes and corrective actions.
Performs other duties as assigned and required.
2. Equipment Set-up and Operability
Ensure set-ups/equipment changeovers/repairs for packaging and process equipment are done timely and correctly. Develop, improve and maintain change over sheets, startup checklists and procedures to ensure ‘first hour full power’.
Develop equipment specific certification and training programs that include operation, set-up, PM, troubleshooting and repairs. Train and certify technicians on the equipment specific programs.
Review, recommend and implement improvements in operation, autonomous maintenance and maintenance activities.
3. Machinery / Repair / Equipment Maintenance
Familiar with all packaging, process and support equipment within the site.
Initiate and participate in trouble shooting and corrective action investigation activities. Ensure technical aspect of proposed problem resolution is implemented as required.
Maintain accurate inventory of equipment spare parts and change parts.
Identify and purchase replacement equipment components through interfacing with technical personnel from external contractors/suppliers.
Resolve failure modes of plant support equipment, including compressors, heat exchangers, dust collectors, vacuum systems, through collaboration with the Facilities Department.
Conduct general troubleshooting of pneumatic and hydraulic systems, drive-mechanisms including, but not limited to, motors, gearboxes, pulleys and bearings and of PLC/MMI, Photo sensors, Vision Systems, Thermal Printers, etc.
Review reliability of equipment and recommend improvements
4. Continuous Improvement
Lead, actively participate and support facility and corporate Lean Manufacturing initiatives
Develop, review and improve preventative maintenance work to reduce failure modes
Conceptualize and implement design upgrades to outmoded devices and systems in an effort to increase efficiencies and reliability.
Participate on new product launch teams and provide feasibility information, assist in development of specifications and acceptance protocols and initiate projects where appropriate.
Review new equipment purchase specifications. Provide feedback with regards to equipment design and operability. Participate in Factory Acceptance Tests, commissioning and start-up of new equipment installations. Aid in the installation of new equipment.
Support IQ/OQ/PQ validation process.
5. Health and Safety
Proactively identify and resolve safety concerns.
Identify areas where training is required
Observe and conform to all OHSA and EH&S guidelines and procedures
Conduct risk and hazard assessments and actively participate and evaluate PSR’s.
Participate in the establishment of annual EH&S objectives

Qualifications
Skills/Qualifications
Education: Engineering degree/diploma or equivalent maintenance experience
Experience: 3-5 years
Licenses/Certifications: Millwright certificate or Electrical License an asset
Competencies:
Must be familiar with Packaging Equipment
Excellent interpersonal, communication and negotiating skills
Broad engineering and/or maintenance background in a manufacturing, filling and packaging environment
Knowledge of mechanical and electrical trouble shooting methods.
Knowledge of how to use machine tools and hand tools safely and correctly
Working knowledge of the principles of electronics and pneumatics
Working knowledge of PLC’s and PLC programming
Knowledge of CMMS principles of operation
Knowledge of safety responsibilities (legal and company procedures)
