JOB PURPOSE

The Ceramics Education Manager oversees the day-to-day maintenance and operations of the Ceramics Studios in the Art School as well as oversees the training and volunteer programs. This is an integral position helping to grow and shape the ceramic studio operations and programs in an expanding community-based art school. The Ceramics program currently accounts for 83% of our student body. The Ceramics Education Manager is an experienced ceramics artist who can run two ceramics studios serving 200+ students. The Ceramics Education Manager is deeply knowledgeable about best practices and safety in art studios, especially ceramics, and will ensure the Art School studios meet educational and programmatic standards. The Ceramics Educational Coordinator also teaches a minimum of two ceramics courses per term.

The Ceramics Education Manager is comfortable working with diverse populations including instructors, volunteers, facilities’ staff, and students (adults and youth). The manager contributes to studios that are collegial and creative gathering spaces for artists of all skill levels.

• Supervises volunteers and apprentices

• Works with marketing, evaluation, operations, and program teams across the agency

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES

Studio Maintenance and Operations (45%)- 18 hours

The Ceramics Education Manager is responsible for all aspects of:

• Studio Cleanliness, Organization, and Operations

• Studio Safety

• Monitoring Open Studio and Studio Events

• Communicating Procedures to Faculty and Students

• Maintaining Materials and Equipment

• Inventory or all materials

• Implementing Sustainable Studio Practices

• Maintaining an efficient timeline for kiln firings

Ceramic Arts Instruction (20%)- 8 hours

The Assistant Director is responsible for teaching a minimum of two ceramic courses per term. Expertise in the following areas is required:

• Handbuilding and Wheel Throwing Techniques

• Glazing and Surface Decoration Techniques

• Positive Communication and Feedback • Pedagogy & Curriculum • Use of Materials & Equipment • Safety Protocols and Sustainable Practices

Supervise Volunteer Program (15%)- 6 hours

• Manage and Support Studio Volunteers

• Develop Weekly Schedule & Processes for Studio Volunteers

• Lead Annual Competition for Art School Apprenticeships

• Manage and Support Studio Apprentices

• Liaise with Office of Strategic Service & Civic Engagement at Manny Cantor Center

Program Development (15%)- 6 hours

• Support supervisor and director to develop new partnerships, programs and events.

• Creation and implementation of Student Resource Library

• Supervise Ceramic Artist in Residence Program, focusing on a diverse population of artists

• Implementation and Expansion of new Ceramics Standards of Pedagogy

• Assist with marketing research to develop new programs.

• Support evaluation projects.

• Plan, Support, and Execute expanded programming (workshops, sales, special events)

Other (5%) – 2 hours

• Support planning and delivery of Art School faculty meetings each term.

• Meet 1:1 with supervisor and supervisee on a needed basis. • Perform other duties as assigned.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree, or equivalent experience, preferably in Studio Arts (with ample coursework in ceramics)

• 3-4 years experience working in professional ceramic studios with similar volume in a managerial role

• Experience teaching ceramics classes

• Innovative, passionate, and excited to manage art studios for various disciplines

• Strong organizational, writing, and communication skills; attention to detail, reflective demeanor

• Proactive, problem-solver, and ability to operate independently in a fast-paced environment

• Strong interpersonal skills and experience working with a diverse group of instructors and colleagues

• Demonstrated connections to the larger NYC arts community

• Ability to work some evenings and weekends

Physical Requirements

• Physical ability to perform physical activities such as, but not limited to, lifting heavy items (up to 25 pounds), bending, walking, and standing for prolonged periods of time up to 3 hours per day.

• Physical ability to lift and position 25 lb. kiln shelves repeatedly to load and unload kilns as well as lift 25 lb. of clay at a time when using the pug mill.
