The Brearley School Hiring for Lower, Middle and Upper School Teacher of Physical Education at New York, NY Full Time

The Brearley School, an independent girls’ school serving over 700 students K-XII, seeks a Physical Education Teacher for a one-year, full-time position beginning August 2022. The PE Teacher will be a member of the Physical Education Department and work with PE faculty teams in the Lower, Middle, and/or Upper Schools and, as a member of the Athletics Department, coach the equivalent of two varsity seasons in the Middle and/or Upper School athletic program.

A Brearley teacher also educates students through service in other areas, such as advising a small group of students, for example, guiding a club or chaperoning trips, and attending extracurricular events in which the students take part.

Responsibilities include:
teaching the PE curriculum, which includes fitness, wellness, and sport, as assigned to grades K-12.

addressing the needs of individual students and modeling inclusive teaching practices;

engaging in anti-racist pedagogy and supporting the equity mission of the school;

participating in and/or leading grade-level team planning meetings with PE colleagues;

communicating effectively with students, athletes, and colleagues on a regular basis, and communicating with families as needed;

assessing the skill level of athletes during tryouts and throughout the season, making equitable decisions about appointing positions, playing time, strategy, and practice times; and prioritizing the safety of students and athletes in all settings;

helping to plan and execute school-wide events hosted by the PE and Athletics Departments, including Mountain Day, Lower School Field Day, Middle/Upper School Field Day, and Homecoming.

The ideal candidate will:
have a degree in Physical Education (or related subject) and/or at least three years of experience in teaching PE;

demonstrate understanding of and enthusiasm for teaching elementary and middle school students;

experience and passion for coaching students in the Middle and/or Upper School grades (V-XII);

demonstrate the ability to develop and adapt pedagogy, curriculum, and assessments for students with a range of skill levels and learning styles

show a commitment to helping students think independently and develop confidence in their own abilities;

have excellent collaboration and communication skills;

be eager to build relationships with people of all backgrounds across the school community;

be able to articulate how one’s identity plays a role in the classroom and on the field and model inclusive behavior in all settings.
