The Specialized P.E. Teacher (P.E. Teacher Therapist) is responsible for instructing elementary school students or junior/senior high school students with severe emotional, behavioral, and/or developmental disabilities in a program of physical education. Positively motivates students to develop appropriate skills, attitudes, and knowledge; utilizes a variety of instructional techniques appropriate for students’ abilities; and creates a safe and orderly learning environment. Develops, implements, and coordinates wellness activities that promote and encourage physical fitness, good hygiene and healthy behaviors.

PAY: $42,744 – $53,430/year starting, based on experience and education, paid over school breaks
WORK HOURS: Full-time, generally 8:00 A.M. to 3:30 P.M., Monday through Friday, following the school calendar.

Demonstrates an ability to apply trauma-informed principles and integrates them into daily practice. Communicates effectively and promotes collaborative problem solving by demonstrating care and respect in considering the diverse experiences and perspectives of others.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: *

• **Physical Education
• Designs and implements comprehensive adaptive P.E. curriculum which meets the individual, behavioral, developmental and life skills needs of students.
• Collects and prepares behavioral and motor progress data for establishing individual programs and to report progress at staffings.
• Coordinates and participates in initial/annual motor screening/assessments as necessary.

• **Interdisciplinary Team Structure
• Collaborates with classroom teaching and other support staff in planning for and scheduling programming and/or services for students.
• Cooperates with the supervisory and administrative staff in team decision making and the implementation of team decisions relative to instruction and behavioral treatment.
• Coordinates information and programming with the occupational therapist. Consults with the occupational therapist related to students with motor goals.
• Assists with classroom coverage, as needed.

• Program Services: Cooperates with administrative staff in scheduling special programming. Assists with the supervision of students during arrival and dismissal times. Attends and participates in student staffings.
• **Staff/Student Interaction:
• Promotes a positive, mutually respectful relationship with assigned students.
• Utilizes approved behavior management techniques.
• Provides a healthy role model for students by teaching and modeling appropriate social, behavioral, and life skills.
• Communicates and interacts in a way which is positive and developmentally appropriate, using proper tone, volume, and cadence of voice.
• Maintains professional boundaries with students and their families.

• Materials, Equipment and Supplies: Inventories and orders materials and supplies for implementation of the P.E. program, according to guidelines and within the school budget. Prepares and maintains gym equipment. Provides appropriate safety instruction and makes safety checks on equipment and field areas to insure the overall safety of students.
• Treatment Team: Attends meetings and provides input to the long range planning of the total school program.
• Quality Improvement: Contributes to quality improvement through active participation in Quality Improvement activities, as needed.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: *

• Bachelor’s degree in physical education, special education, or related field.
• Professional Educator License with the State of Illinois with approval to teach Physical Education required.
• At least one year of teaching in a special education program in a public or private facility is preferred. Previous experience with a physical education program and/or working with adolescents with developmental, learning or behavioral disabilities preferred.
• Willingness and ability to work in an interdisciplinary team structure.
• Knowledge of and skill in utilizing behavioral/social learning approaches to working with adolescents. Ability to establish rapport, communicate effectively, maintain consistency and boundaries with and effectively motivate student population.
• Good physical and mental health, including the physical ability to maintain the safety and well-being of children for whom there is responsibility and implement The Baby Fold’s approved physical crisis intervention procedures.
• Must pass necessary background checks including drug screen.
• Ability and willingness to transport students for job responsibilities, including a valid Illinois driver’s license, which has not been revoked or suspended within the past three years.
• Demonstrated competence in serving a culturally diverse population. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with a diverse workforce.
