Full Job Description

Teachers at Texas Virtual Schools serve as vitally important experts in our organization and help to drive the success of our students. Teachers are accountable for student course completion, engagement, content proficiency, legal compliance, and state academic accountability rating.

Teachers at TXVS are full-time employees, hired, supported, and evaluated by their department chairs and the vice president of academics. Teachers provide students with appropriate learning activities and experiences in the core academic subject area assigned to help them fulfill their potential for intellectual, emotional, physical, and social growth. Teachers incorporate our “education with destination” model that enables students to understand their unique qualities, map their skills and interests to high-wage / high-demand careers and develop competencies to function successfully in society. Responsibilities will include the following:


Instructional Strategies

  • Provide direct instruction lessons that remediate skill deficiencies and reflect accommodations for differences in individual student learning;
  • Conduct an assessment of student learning styles and use results to plan instructional activities;
  • Hold regular office hours as established by campus administrators;
  • Provide individual and/or group tutoring as needed to support content understanding and course progress;
  • Work cooperatively with special education teachers to modify curricula as needed for special education students according to guidelines established in Individual Education Plans (IEP);
  • Work with other members of staff to determine instructional goals, objectives, and methods according to school requirements.

Student Growth and Development

  • Conduct ongoing assessments of student achievement and STAAR readiness through formal and informal assessments;
  • Understand and utilize student skills, values, and interest surveys and career selections to promote individualized instruction;
  • Assume responsibility for extracurricular activities as assigned. Sponsor outside activities approved by the campus administrators;
  • Be a positive role model through regular contact with students – Create, Collaborate, Communicate; support the mission and vision of the school.

Classroom Management and Organization

  • Create an online classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of students;
  • Manage student behavior per the Student Code of Conduct and student handbook;
  • Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities;
  • Compile, maintain, and file all s, records, and other documents required.

Communication

  • Establish and maintain a professional relationship and open communication with parents, students, colleagues, and community members;
  • Regularly monitor student attendance, course progress, and engagement and coordinate intervention with administrators, counselors, and advisors;
  • Establish a regular pattern of contact with students and families per school guidelines to include direct messaging, email, phone calls, and Google Meets / Zoom rooms.

Professional Growth and Development

  • Participate in staff development activities to improve job-related skills;
  • Comply with state, district, and school regulations and policies for classroom teachers;
  • Attend and participate in faculty meetings, and peer learning communities, and serve on staff committees as required.

Other

  • Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures;
  • Proctor in-person state test sites as needed;
  • Other duties as assigned.


Education/Certification Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university;
  • Valid Texas teaching certificate with required endorsements or related training and work experience for certification waivers under the District of Innovation Plan (DOI);
  • Demonstrated competency in the core academic subject area assigned.

  • Desire to put students first;
  • Knowledge of core academic subject assigned;
  • Commitment to data-driven instructional practices;
  • Ability to instruct students and manage their behavior;
  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.


Experience:

  • Student teaching approved internship or related work experience;
  • Certificates and Licenses: Current Texas Teaching Certificate, preference is given for any given elective/CTE specialization.
  • Experience using a student information system and/or another type of database;
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills;
  • Proven proficiency in Zoom, Google Workspace, PEIMS, LMS, MS Excel, MSWord, and Outlook;
  • Ability to pass a required background check.
