SUPERVISOR: Associate Vice President, Medical Education Department
BASIC FUNCTION
Research and develop policies and activities related to TMA’s position on issues affecting or related to medical education. This involves research and policy development for each phase of the physician workforce pathway: medical education, graduate medical education, medical licensing, and board certification. Responsible for staffing a governance body and assisting in staffing other department components such as the Council on Medical Education and the bodies that report to the council, or in association with department activities.
MAJOR RESPONSBILITIES/TASKS
7. Respond to telephone and written inquiries for information on medical education; and
8. Perform other related duties as directed or required.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY
No direct supervisory responsibility.
INDEPENDENCE/SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Will generally work independently but also with staff in other TMA divisions and departments. Assignments can be complex and may vary greatly. This requires taking initiative, exercising independent judgement, and problem-solving skills to determine the best and most effective/appropriate course of action.
GENERAL QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
Knowledge and Experience
Requires a robust understanding of the field of public policy, preferably associated with medical education and physician workforce. Knowledge required is generally equivalent to the attainment of a Master’s degree, and two to three years of work experience in policy activities. Strongest candidates would have knowledge and experience in any or all of the following: legislative processes; and state regulatory agencies, including higher education, state health planning, and medical licensing.
Skills and Abilities
Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions and to work effectively with other TMA employees both within and across other departments and divisions. Must be able to participate as an effective team member. Must be organized, flexible, and be able to develop evaluative work-plans. Strong public speaking and writing skills are of critical importance, as is the ability to work effectively with TMA physician members. Must be PC literate. Ability to plan work and conduct statistical analysis using the most appropriate software and methodology would be helpful.
