Tesla Hiring for Sr/Staff Torque Tool Engineer – Connectivity & Digitalization at Austin, TX Full Time

We are seeking a highly skilled and innovative Torque Tool Engineer/Specialist to join Tesla’s IT-Manufacturing Solutions Engineering team and lead the transformation of torque tooling systems across multiple factories. The ideal candidate will be responsible for spearheading the migration of wireless connectivity from Wi-Fi to private 5G, driving the transition towards full virtualization of tool controllers, and providing engineering-level support for troubleshooting activities in production operations.

• Lead the planning and implementation of transitioning wireless torque tool communication from Wi-Fi/Bluetooth to Private 5G across all factory locations
• Collaborate with IT Network teams to ensure seamless integration to the private 5G infrastructure with existing systems
• Conduct comprehensive tool and network assessments and performance evaluations to optimize connectivity and ensure uninterrupted torque data transmission
• Accelerate the adoption of 5G towards torque tool vendors to ensure maximum reliability at low cost

Virtual Tool Controller Implementation

• Develop a roadmap and strategy to migrate physical tool controllers to virtual tool controllers hosted on Tesla’s server infrastructure
• Work closely with local torque tool leads to understand their problem statements/use cases and how virtualizations can support them in maximum equipment reliability and easier troubleshooting
• Work closely with software developers and engineering teams to design and implement a user-friendly, secure, and robust virtual tool control system
• Train local manufacturing teams on using the new process effectively and ensure a smooth transition

Troubleshooting and Engineering Support

• Provide expert-level support to resolve complex technical issues related to torque tool connectivity and software-bases issues
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to diagnose and troubleshoot torque tool-related problems impacting production operations
• Continuously monitor performance metrics and implement proactive measures to prevent downtime and enhance tool reliability

Process Improvement and Innovation

• Identify opportunities for process optimization, increased efficiency, and cost reduction in torque tooling operations
• Research and propose cutting-edge technologies and solutions to enhance wireless torque tool performance and connectivity

• Proven experience in managing and implementing (wireless) torque tool systems in an automotive manufacturing environment
• Strong expertise in wireless communication and virtualization technologies
• Proficiency in troubleshooting wireless systems and resolving complex technical issues
• Familiarity with torque tool calibration, maintenance, and quality control standards
• Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to think critically and make data-driven decisions
• Prior experience working with IT/OT engineering related projects, private 5G is a plus
• Effective communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate with cross-functional teams and train manufacturing personnel
• Maintain a high degree of professionalism and integrity
