POSITION SUMMARY:

As a Black, LatinX, Educator of Color Fellow with Teach Western Mass you will join a regional affinity cohort of teachers with those identities. The Fellowship is designed to empower and support you through your education career and to close the opportunity gap for aspiring educators and students alike. Fellows receive individualized support and resources that continue throughout training, their first year as a TWM teacher, and beyond, including:

• Anti-Racist and Culturally Responsive Teaching training.
• Engagement with Affinity Groups, networking and professional development opportunities.
• Scholarships and other personalized financial support.

As a BLEC Fellow you will also participate in the TWM Residency program. As a Resident, you will earn your Initial Teaching License in one year. The Teach Western Mass Residency is an accelerated training and licensure program—approved by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education—that gives aspiring teachers from all backgrounds the chance to lead a classroom while receiving significant support toward earning Massachusetts certification. Certification is offered in Moderate Disabilities K-12 (Special Education), English as a Second Language K-12, and Middle School Math.

Start your coursework independently in the Spring, begin full-time training by May 31, 2023 and receive individualized coaching throughout your entire first year in the classroom. Additionally, you will receive support from the TWM Residency team and a tightly-knit cohort of your peers as you complete your coursework and teaching experience.

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS

Salaries: Once you are hired at a Teach Western Mass partner school and begin teaching in Fall 2023, you will receive a comprehensive benefits package dictated by your employer. Our partner schools offer salaries ranging from $49,000- $53,500 to first-year teachers, with experienced teachers compensated at a higher rate.

AmeriCorps: As a TWM Resident you will have the opportunity to serve with TWM’s Professional Corps AmeriCorps Program. TWM AmeriCorps members (ACM) build on strategies learned in the Residency to put Culturally Responsive and Antiracist Teaching into practice in the classroom to guide students through a service-learning project that promotes student agency and community engagement. Members are also eligible for the Segal Education award valued at $6,895.

In addition, through a partnership with American International College and as AmeriCorps members, Middle School Math and Moderate Disabilities Residents can transfer their TWM credits using their Segal Award and earn a master’s degree by taking just a few more courses!

PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS & TUITION;

You Must

• Demonstrate commitment to equity and social justice
• Hold a bachelor’s degree and a Minimum of a 2.5 GPA (obtained by May 31, 2023).
• Meet all legal requirements to work in the United States.
• Not have already completed an educator preparation program and/or must not hold a valid Initial or Professional Massachusetts teaching license.
• Pass a criminal background check, FBI fingerprinting, and additional background checks required by school partners.

We’re Seeking

• Candidates who can apply their diverse, transferable skills from previous experiences toward positively influencing the trajectory of our students (especially those often marginalized by life circumstances).
• Candidates who promote academic achievement in high-need subject areas (Moderate Disabilities, ESL, and Middle School Math) and make a difference in the lives of and outcomes for students in Holyoke and Springfield.

Tuition for the 2023-24 school year is $9,000, which may be paid out through the course of the year, once you have secured a full-time teaching position with a Teach Western Mass partner school. Scholarships, fellowships, and other financial support are available to help you offset the tuition cost.
