Symetra’s Investment Accounting department is looking for a highly motivated Finance Manager with a passion for people management and strong accounting and technical skills.

About the role

The primary responsibility of this Finance Manager position is to lead a team of investment accounting professionals to success. To be successful in this role, this person must have a passion for helping others, strong ability to lead, coach and develop teams, and a solid technical accounting expertise/background.

What you will do

• Lead a team of experienced accounting and/or financial reporting professionals (teams can range from 4 to 6 people); provide coaching, goal setting, and support their professional development
• Run the day-to-day activities of the traditional investments accounting team including the month-end financial close and oversight of vendor team
• Maintain scorecard to track vendor performance
• Review and sign off on GAAP & STAT quarterly disclosures and footnote support, and present to senior management
• Lead quarterly impairments tests by collaboratively working with department and asset managers
• Own internal control framework for relevant accounting areas including walkthroughs with the external auditors
• Participate in team’s priorities and day to day operations with a goal to create efficiencies and building processes for scale and growth
• Answer staff questions and get involved to help resolve escalation issues
• Problem solves when issues arise
• Implement new guidance and operationalize new investment types when they arise
• Lead special projects, developing and executing a project plan, and communicating progress with management and key stakeholders

Compensation

Salary range: $95,500 – $159,100 plus eligibility for company annual bonus program

Who you are

• 4+ years of experience in leading people and ability to drive results through and with others
• BA/BS in Accounting with 4-8 years related accounting experience OR equivalent combination of education and experience
• Additional preferred qualifications: experience in the financial services or insurance industry, CPA certification, recent accounting experience in investment asset, and Big-4 experience
• Excellent understanding of GAAP and STAT accounting principles with a focus on financial instruments
• Extensive Microsoft Excel experience
• Strong written and oral communication skills; ability to make well-reasoned and timely decisions by applying analytical skills
• Experience in leading projects and reviewing the work of others
• Self-motivated, inquisitive, thrives on mentoring, developing and growing the members of the team
• Experience in developing process efficiencies and improvements
