We have an exciting opportunity for a web application developer to join our team to help design, build, launch and evolve powerful bespoke web applications for our clients.
Suru Partners is a web app & website development consultancy creating complex bespoke web applications and interactive web experiences. We’re based in Coventry and work with clients across the UK and overseas.
The role
You’ll join our development team to design, build, launch and evolve powerful bespoke web applications for our clients. You’ll primarily be writing core back-end code and business logic for these applications. You’ll also be involved in testing, maintaining, troubleshooting and evolving existing client applications that we manage.
As well as writing code you’ll be coming up with and testing ideas, defining solutions and modelling possible designs — not just for your own work but to help other team members think about theirs — and you’ll be working with our directors and project managers to make things happen. The work at Suru is varied and challenging so you won’t be working on lots of monotonous tasks.
Alongside your core work you’ll also, depending on your interests and experience, have opportunities to get involved in other technical areas such as devops/CI/CD, infrastructure and systems architecture, or with commercial areas such as budgeting, project management, development processes and client-facing work.
Core required skills
Although your role will primarily involve developing web applications we’re intentionally leaving the core required skills high level as we recognise that good developers can easily learn new programming languages or paradigms and we’re more interested in your softer skills and experience than a checklist of technical skills.
If you feel you don’t currently fulfil all these requirements but are keen to develop your skills, or feel you have other relevant expertise, we’d still love to hear from you. We invest in our team so we’re very willing to teach you the skills you’ll need if you’d otherwise be a great fit.
Desirable skills
What we can offer
We’ll provide a modern, powerful Mac to work with as well as whatever you need for a productive, ergonomic working environment in our Coventry office or at home (although you’re of course welcome to use your own hardware if you’d prefer).
Many of us have young families and other pursuits so we embrace flexible working. We will consider full- and part-time applicants as well as those who want to work fully from our office or a blend of office and remote. Many of us have worked partially remotely since we started the business in 2014 so we already operate with some of us in the office and some of us at home. We trust our team so we operate a flexible holiday policy.
At Suru you’ll develop your knowledge, skills and experience as a professional developer through formal training and, more importantly, through daily collaboration with our other experienced developers and through working on significant real-world applications.
What’s it like at Suru?
Suru Partners is a web app development consultancy creating complex bespoke web applications and interactive experiences. We’re based in Coventry and work with clients across the UK and overseas. We do a lot of work with medium-to-large non-profits, including a number of faith-based organisations, and are proud of the impact our work has.
We’re a small, close-knit team who care deeply about the work we do for clients — we’re not just shipping code as fast as possible. We have incredibly low staff turnover — our team members tend to stay for many years. Our clients also work with us for years so you’ll get to know the complex apps we’ve developed as well as work with us on new greenfield projects.
You’ll be working directly with our whole team, including the directors and senior developers, to learn about and model our clients’ domains, collaboratively design solutions and deploy significant applications to production. We tend to take on projects which others deem too complex so you’ll stretch your modelling and conceptual skills as well as technical skills. Company leadership is actively involved in the projects we do so you’ll have clear, regular direction and support so you can do your best work.
How to apply
Please include your CV (as a PDF, please) in your application as well as a covering note telling us a bit about yourself, why you’re interested in the role and why you’d be a good fit for our team.
Please also provide materials from work you’ve done. It could be personal Github code, sample code from commercial work, open-source contributions, or a case study and description of your role in a project — anything that helps us see what you’ve done and what you’ve been responsible for in previous roles. We’ll enjoy discussing those in more depth as we get to know you.
