SUMMARY:

Directs and coordinates food service activities of hospital or nursing home by performing the following duties personally or through subordinate supervisors.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Plans and coordinates standards and procedures of food storage, preparation, and service; equipment sand department sanitation; and employee safety.
• Confers with Dietary Consultant to ensure that menus and department policies conform with nutritional standards, government regulations, and internal procedures.
• Reviews patient diet information and discusses requests, changes, and inconsistencies with patient, professional staff, and/or resident food committee.
• Inspects food and food preparation and storage areas.
• Tastes, smells, and observes food to ensure conformance with recipes and appearance standards.
• Attends meetings with employees, administrative, and/or regulatory personnel to discuss regulations, procedures, grievances, and recommendations for improving food service.
• Computes operating costs, maintains records, and prepares s for use of management or administrative personnel.
• Must be personable, resourceful and enthusiastic. Must have ability to work well with employees in the department, as well as other departments within the hospital.
• Organizes and supervises entire Dietary Department with assistance of the Dietary Consultant in accordance with accepted standards.
• Is responsible for supervision of dietary activities, maintains quality of patient care, including compliance with physician’s orders and hospital policies and utilizes staff time and abilities effectively.
• Prepares staffing patterns to meet the dietary requirements. Interviews, selects, appoints, promotes, and discharges all dietary personnel. Defines their respective duties and establishes the general pattern of delegated authority and responsibility.
• Carries on a continuous analysis and evaluation of the dietary services rendered. Recommends and participates in studies of the quality of dietary service and staffing utilization studies.
• Sets up the budgetary request program and administers the budget appropriation of the dietary service.
• Initiates and conducts policy forming and problem solving conferences of the dietary personnel. Participates in policy forming and problem solving conferences of the hospital as they affect the dietary service.
• Maintains open relationships with the patients and their families.
• Oversees and supervises the overall orientation and in-service education programs necessary to maintain the proficiency and professionalism of the dietary staff.
• Attends annual safety and infection control in-services and other related workshops, lectures, and in-service programs.
• Is responsible for updating the rand file.
• Completes food service s and records.
• Computes time cards.
• Is responsible for monthly dietary progress notes, nutritional assessment and the nutritional portion of the MDS form for long term care/extended care patients and has computer access to the MDSA program to perform the above responsibilities.
• Is required to attend quarterly care conferences on each resident.
• Keeps current on the personnel policies, procedure manuals, policy manuals and other manuals pertinent to Dietary. (Fire, Disaster, MSDS, Infection Control, etc.)
• Is able to respond to pressure and respond to frequent change and suggestions.
• Promotes good working relationships with other department, co-workers, residents, families, and physicians. Is supportive of the facility in the community. Maintains confidentiality and uses discretion in discussing hospital matters.
• Participates in department or unit quality improvement activities, compliance activities and HIPAA activities. Attends monthly management meetings and other meetings that are required.
• Other duties may be assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Directly supervises all employees in the Dietary Department. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning , assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; and addressing complaints and resolving problems.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

Associate’s Degree (A.A.) or equivalent from a two-year college or technical school; or six months to one year related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

Current Driver’s License. Dietary Manager’s Certificate of Completion.

Pay: $24.00 – $39.10 per hour
