An exciting new opportunity to join Support Connect’s rapidly expanding support provision for apprenticeship learners. You will be working as part of a team of Learning Mentors and Wellbeing Mentors that deliver highly specialised, individually tailored academic and mental health support services to learners who face barriers to their learning which are created by a particular impairment such as mental-health conditions, SpLD or autistic spectrum disorder (ASC).
As a Wellbeing Mentor you will work remotely on a one to one basis providing wellbeing support for apprentices and other learners with mental health difficulties. You will address the barriers to learning and apprenticeship progression created by a particular mental health condition. You will work with learners to identify their individual needs and strengths and to develop and provide a support programme that will build strategies and skills to facilitate the learner take responsibility for their own learning. Wellbeing Mentors are not advocates or counsellors; their role is to provide support which allows the apprentice to access their learning, develop independence, build confidence and which empowers them to manage their study and workload. You will provide a level of emotional support to help learners to engage with learning and the social aspects of life as a learner. This may include, but is not limited to, helping learners to:
· reflect on their own behaviour
· manage change and difficult emotions
· deal with difficult social, learning or workplace situations
· have a healthy work/life balance
· deal with transitions and new situations
· address their individual wellbeing and develop healthy coping strategies
You will:
· provide weekly or ad-hoc support for learners so that they can take responsibility for their own learning
· set clear expectations and standards for your sessions
· provide learner-centred support and advice
· show sensitivity and understanding of the impact of mental health conditions in learning environments and use this knowledge to tailor support appropriately.
· provide Individual Learning Plans (ILPs) to funding providers on the nature and content of individualised support and provide recommendations for continuation of support if necessary.
· be required to keep accurate and up-to-date case notes and associated evidence and documentation in line with Support Connect’s procedures.
· primarily work remotely and online, but you may be asked to deliver support face to face and will be required to engage in peer learning and attend in-person training and CPD events.
· engage in any research or preparation as necessary to suit the learning needs of the learner.
· liaise with the Lead Disability Adviser and course providers about specific learner cases, their needs, their academic progress and any welfare issues that may need referral to another agency.
· operate as a part of a Learning Support Team and will be expected to contribute to the wider work of the team and attend team meetings as appropriate.
· set clear standards and expectations for your sessions and provide learner-centred support
· undertake ongoing CPD (minimum of 10 hours each year) in Mental Health, Wellbeing and Mentoring
· work, at all times, in accordance with Support Connect’s policies and procedures.
· work, at all times, in accordance with the principles of the social model of disability with the aim of creating an inclusive learner experience for all.
