JOB DESCRIPTION for
Special Education Teacher Grades 5th – 8th
Mild to Moderate, Learning Center
Title: Teacher, Special Education Learning Center (TK – 2nd grade), Mild to Moderate
s To: Site Administration, Principal
Overall Responsibilities: The special education teacher has the specific responsibility to plan and implement a learning center education program which meets the unique needs of the TK-2nd grade special education student; will instruct special education students in accordance with established policies and procedures; develop and implement IEP goals, and assess students, assign duties to classified personnel, oversee the classified staff’s interaction with students, provide input to the Administration concerning the performance of classified staff assigned to their classroom or program, and perform other duties as required by law.
Follows appropriate activities determined by Board of Education guidelines.
Essential Job Tasks:
1. Provides specialized instruction to pupils to meet the goals and objectives as developed in the Individualized Education Program (IEP).
2. Assesses individual students to determine present levels of performance.
3. Organizes, plans and facilitates I.E.P. meetings.
4. Serves as the caseworker for each special education student with an I.E.P. in his/her program.
5. Implements the IEP with appropriate lesson plans, materials and classroom strategies and prepares Individual Education programs.
6. Uses effective behavior management techniques to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom.
7. Prepares schedules and timelines to implement classroom activities.
8. Observes and makes ongoing evaluation of pupil’s academic and social growth, keeps appropriate records, prepares progress s and communicates with parents on individual pupil progress.
9. Cooperates with other professional staff members in helping pupils solve health, attitude and learning problems.
10. Mainstreams children into integrated settings for maximum interaction with peers.
11. Creates a functional and attractive environment for learning through room displays, bulletin boards and learning centers.
12. Plans and coordinates the work of instructional aides.
13. Maintains professional competence through participation in in-service educational activities provided by the county office and professional growth activities.
14. Work directly with classroom teachers in providing identified studens a Title 1 program, which enable them to meet grade level and State Standards in reading.
15. Conduct testing and evaluation and provide necessary and required s for selected
Title 1 students.

These physical characteristics are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job safely.
1. Standing/Walking: Frequently; throughout work shift while performing classroom duties, including recess supervision, field trips.
2. Sitting: Occasionally; while performing classroom duties at low tables assisting students.
3. Lift/Carry: Frequently; 1-15 pounds; classroom instructional materials, books, binders, paperwork. Occasional lifting 16-35 pounds, books and materials, assisting students and moving equipment.
4. Bending/Stooping: Frequently; at knees/waist/neck while providing one-to-one student services or retrieving items from lower shelves.
5. Push/Pull: Occasionally; using both hands and arms exerting a force of 10-30 pounds while assisting students, moving furniture and equipment and opening doors, etc.

6. Climbing/Balancing: Seldom, using stepladder in classroom, may be stairs at some locations.
7. Kneeling/Crouching/Crawling: Occasionally; kneeling may be required while assisting students in physical activities.
8. Crouching/crawling not required but may choose to get in these positions with children for activities.
9. Hands/Arms: Constant use of both in reaching/handling/grasping/fingering/gripping while performing a variety of physical and administrative duties. Overhead reaching is required.
10. Sight/Hearing/Speech: Constantly; to provide instructional assistance to student.
Assignment may require hand/eye coordination, depth perception and peripheral vision depending on assignment.
