About the role

We are looking for a junior web developer who is passionate about web development, to join our growing team in Edinburgh. As a junior member of the team, you will probably have a number of side projects, and do a lot of reading about what’s new in web development but you might not have much commercial experience. That’s ok, we’re looking for potential.

As part of the team you will design and build client-facing products to provide visually engaging insights into the pricing, valuation and discovery of financial research. We use modern technologies and the Kanban agile methodology, in a fast paced and highly dynamic environment which will provide a fantastic opportunity to hone your technical skills and learn about investment banking.

In 2021 we rolled out a new client-facing digital dashboard for providing in-depth insights on price benchmarking and released a new Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG) supplier comparison site. In 2022 we have ambitious plans to deliver new information to our existing clients and to explore new global markets in other areas of investment research. You will have opportunities to take ownership of these and to see them make a difference to our clients.

Our tech team is based in Edinburgh and our commercial teams are in London and in the US. We are highly collaborative across the organisation and there will be opportunities to work closely with non-technical team members and to interact with our clients. We pride ourselves in providing a supportive and fun work environment with plenty of opportunities to learn new technologies and techniques.

Our tech stack comprises a PHP Laravel backend, Vue.js frontend and cloud-managed MySQL, with Python for ETL and process automation.

Reporting to the CTO, the main responsibilities will be to:

• Develop and operate all Laravel and Vue.js based client products, using agile and data-driven methodologies
• Support the development of internal tooling, including external and customer data ingestion and processing
• Contribute to the continuous improvement of the agile team by contributing to monthly retrospectives, peer reviewing other engineers’ code, and sharing your knowledge with other team members
• Collaborate closely with the commercial side of the business, to understand our clients’ wants and needs and to provide data and tooling for the data scientists and content editors
• Help shape the future of the technical platform, using appropriate technologies and techniques to address scale, latency, quality and security needs

About you

We are looking for someone with a passion for building great software as an important member of the Substantive team. The right person will be:

• Independent, self-motivated and collaborative
• Able to communicate effectively with stakeholders to clarify requirements, demonstrate and explain functionality and answer questions using non-technical jargon
• Eligible to live and work in Scotland, with access to the central Edinburgh office

We don’t have a long list of exact technical skills but we do expect a solid grasp of the following:

• Version control, e.g. git.
• A PHP MVC framework such as Laravel or Symfony
• A Javascript framework such as Vue.js, React or Angular
• SQL and relational databases, ideally MySQL

Bonus points if you have experience in any of the following:

• Hands-on software development responsibility throughout all phases of the product lifecycle, ideally in a commercial environment
• Experience working with Python
• Experience with Wordpress
• Experience with testing
• Exposure to an agile methodology
