Job Purpose: To provide a short term counselling service to the student body and to provide operational support to the Student Support Manager in delivering, supporting and evaluating the counselling service provision.
Key Tasks and Responsibilities:
1 To use a short-term personal counselling approach in helping students identify and address personal difficulties and problems which impact on their ability to study.
2 To identify and assess student difficulties and problems which may need external specialist help and to make appropriate referrals.
3 To work in accordance with the BACP ethical framework.
4 Within the limits of confidentiality, to inform and discuss with the Student Support Manager any issues which may put Counselling Service clients at immediate risk of danger or harm to self or others.
5 To liaise with appropriate external agencies and organisations and establish referral procedures.
6 To liaise appropriately, respecting confidentiality, with Personal/Subject tutors on individual student matters.
7 To liaise with other College Counsellors to ensure smooth running of the Counselling Service.
8 To keep individual profiles and statistical data on students using the Counselling Service and contribute to the writing of a service annual report.
9 To take advantage of line management meetings and external professional counselling supervision, in accordance with BACP requirements.
10 To assist with the Counselling Service evaluation system.
11 To actively consider creative strategies for the development of the service in meeting student needs.
12 To assist in the operation and implementation of effective policies by advising the Student Support Manager on matters related to student needs.
13 To attend Student Support Team meetings when possible and Staff Development days.
14 To take part in activities to promote and publicise the Counselling Service e.g. Freshers Fair, College Experience Days.
15 Ensure that all activities undertaken in the performance of duties conform to current Health and Safety legislation.
16 To comply with the College’s policies and procedures including Health and Safety Legislation, Safeguarding Children and Vulnerable Adults and those covering all aspects of Equality and Diversity.
17 To comply with the requirements of the General Data Protection Regulation (EU) 2016/679 (“GDPR”). It is the responsibility of individual staff members to protect data and to take all reasonable steps to ensure data are kept securely.
18 To undertake other duties as may be required by the Student Support Manager.
Person Specification
Academic
Counselling qualification at least to Diploma level.
Occupational
Experience of working in an educational establishment.
Two years’ experience of supervised short-term focussed counselling approach.
Awareness of relevant external organisations and agencies.
Experience of working with young people.
Special aptitudes/competencies
Gathering relevant information to make an informed initial assessment.
Creating opportunities for enhancing skills through a wide variety of methods and options.
Recognising the differing needs of a range of individuals and adapting own style to be effective with each of them.
Encouraging and supporting other team members to ensure their contributions are recognised and exploited.

Approaching objectives positively in the face of pressures from a variety of sources, both internal and external.
Commitment, initiative and energy to work to a high standard under pressure.
Ability to recognise problems and deal with difficulties effectively, especially when these impact on the quality of delivery of counselling to students.
Terms and Conditions:
1. The appointment will commence as soon as possible.
2. This is a term time appointment for 6 hours per week – 36 weeks per year.
3. Salary is within the range £29,887-£31,503 per annum pro rata (actual salary £3,961-£4,175 per annum). It is a condition of appointment that salary is paid directly into a bank or building society account.

5. Sick leave will be in accordance with the procedures laid down by the Strode College Board of Governors.
6. The postholder will be automatically enrolled into the Local Government Pension Scheme. Contributions are 5.5% of salary.
7. The post is subject to a six-month probationary period. This is seen as essentially a supportive time however unsatisfactory performance may lead to termination of contract. During the probation period 4 mandatory training units must be undertaken. The training sessions are Safeguarding, Prevent, Health and Safety and Equality Diversity and Inclusion. All staff must keep up to date with the document Keeping Children Safe in Education.
