Job Summary
POSITION PURPOSE
The primary purpose of this position is to provide academic support to students in Biology, Chemistry, Healthcare/Nursing courses, and other courses with science content. This includes tutoring, maintaining science model resources, developing course specific tutoring materials, and sustaining the D2L site of science resources on both campuses. Collaboration and coordination with faculty is integral in providing these services. This position also collaborates with ASC department staff on projects, plans, and general department activities.
PRINCIPLE RESPONSIBILITIES AND RESULTS
Provide individual and small group tutoring to students in a variety of science and healthcare courses
Provide tutoring and study skills training on a walk-in basis
Design and provide tutoring materials and resources
Collaborate with instructors on content for tutoring
Embed study skills content within tutoring sessions
Facilitate and monitor student usage of science models and other materials in the North Mankato Science Center and Faribault Academic Support Center
Provide supplemental tutoring resources per science content area
Market the service of walk-in tutoring and science lab usage to individual course sections and individual students enrolled in the courses
Develop, attain, and disseminate study skills materials and on-line resources.
Oversee the needs of the North Mankato Science Center and science tutoring resources in the Faribault Academic Support Center.
Generate and post schedules of tutoring hours and staffing
Update the science tutoring schedules on the ASC website
Update D2L Science Website communications and resources
Develop, order and display science resource materials for student usage
Assist the Peer Tutor and Math Center Coordinator and the Learning Specialist with training, scheduling, and monitoring of student science tutors.
Inventory needs and submit requests for purchases related to the Science Center
Maintain technology items, coordinating with IT to keep them operational for staff and student use
Perform general duties of the Academic Support Center department
Promote ASC services via marketing strategies such as classroom visits, hallway monitors, hallway display cases, informational table of ASC resources during Welcome Day, Advising/Registration Days, and other events
Assist with keeping the ASC tutoring schedules up to date
Attend and participate in ASC department meetings and projects
Participate in college-wide activities and initiatives
Actively participate in college committees /workgroups and lend assistance with college events and hiring teams
Attend meetings and trainings within the department, division and entire campus
Assist SCC students in connecting with appropriate college resources and personnel
Perform other duties as assigned to ensure smooth delivery of student services from the department, the division, and the college.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
Associate or higher degree in Anatomy, Biology, Physiology, Microbiology or Nutrition
One academic year of teaching/tutoring experience in Biology at the high school level or above/or an equivalent combination of education and work experience
Initiative to work independently and schedule programming for science tutoring
Advanced skills in written and verbal communication and computer technology
Excellent organizational skills
Ability to facilitate discussion, interaction and learning in small group settings
Ability to collaborate effectively with faculty and staff
Ability to communicate effectively with students
Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree or higher in biology education or education degree with a science concentration
Experience teaching and/or tutoring science in a postsecondary setting
Experience teaching or tutoring biology using a variety of theories
Experience marketing services to students
Experience with evaluative measures, including software for reporting
Experience in study skills training, including learning styles
Proven leadership skills and ability to take initiative on projects
Skill in designing resources and materials for academic content and study skills areas
