Main Purpose of Job
The main purpose of this position is interviewing and interpreting between spoken English and another language in both consecutive and simultaneous modes in a variety of settings at the agency in an effort to ensure all populations in the county have access to available services. This includes interviewing clients in need of State services and producing translations between English and another language in a variety of forms, documents, s, and correspondence. This directly relates to the agency mission to improve the health of the community. This position is designated emergency essential.
Minimum Qualifications
Education : Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.
Experience : Six months of experience providing formal interpretation and translation services between English and a second language. Formal interpretation services may include documented work as a volunteer interpreter for a nonprofit, human service or faith-based organization.
Notes : 1. Candidates may substitute additional experience interpreting and translating between English and a second language on a year-for-year basis for the required education.
Desired Or Preferred Qualifications
The desired candidate should have successfully completed an Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) through Language Testing International and pass with a rating of Advanced Low on the ACTFL scale. The desired candidate should also be fluent in Haitian Creole.
LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS
Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.
