The Illinois Workers’ Compensation Commission is seeking to hire highly motivated students to fill student worker positions within the agency. The interns will develop professional oral and written communication skills and gain experience in all facets of office work. Through the up to 6-month position, student workers will gain knowledge of the inter-related divisions of the Illinois Workers’ Compensation Commission with a view toward qualifying for a specific position in the Agency upon the completion of academic studies. Work hours and schedule will be mutually agreed upon by supervisor during the onboarding process.
Job Responsibilities
- Under immediate supervision, for a period not to exceed six months, performs support work in an office, field location or state operated facility to become proficient in a given occupation.
- Performs basic clerical functions, including limited keyboarding, filing, receptionist, mailroom, document processing and other clerical support tasks.
- Performs property and supply support functions including delivery of supplies and materials, moving furniture, stocking shelves, packaging and inventory.
- Participates in staff meetings.
Minimum Qualifications
- Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to enrollment in high school or college.
- Requires no previous work experience.
Preferred Qualifications
Prefers the ability to independently carry out routine operations, once established, without further instruction

Workers’ compensation is a no-fault system of benefits paid by employers to workers who experience work-related injuries or diseases.
The Illinois Workers’ Compensation Commission resolves disputes between employees and employers regarding work-related injuries and illnesses. A case is first tried by an arbitrator, whose decision may be reviewed by a panel of three commissioners. Cases may then be appealed to the circuit court, Appellate Court, and Illinois Supreme Court. Like most court systems, the vast majority of disputes are resolved by settlement.
