Who are we?

FSDB is a state public school available at no cost to eligible pre-K and K-12 students who are deaf/hard of hearing, blind/visually impaired or deafblind, including boarding and transportation services. FSDB is nationally recognized for its comprehensive educational services, designed for the unique communication and accessibility needs of students. FSDB also provides educational outreach programs for children ages 0-5 and their families. The FSDB experience provides students with the edge to do more, be more, and achieve more.

How You Will Make An Impact

The incumbent of this position teaches sensory impaired students in an academic program as a full time substitute teacher.

• Conduct and direct student learning experiences using the teacher of record lesson plans. Use required instructional materials to introduce and develop concepts. Develop and maintain a classroom management program. Implement, monitor and evaluate long and short-term objectives based on students’ IEPs. Record and data on individual students, i.e, grade books, incident s, attendance records, etc. Document and correct disruptive student behavior in accordance with school policies and procedures. Maintain a professional relationship with students, parents and other staff members.
• Attend trainings/meetings and implement skills acquired during professional development activities as required by Federal, State and FSDB mandates.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

• Knowledge of the educational needs of deaf/hard-of-hearing and/or blind/visually impaired students;
• Knowledge of the principles and techniques of effective communications;
• Knowledge of the principles, methods and techniques of teaching;
• Knowledge of the principles of human learning, behavior and counseling;
• Knowledge of the principles and techniques of curriculum development;
• Ability to teach individuals in a classroom setting using the principles of differentiated instruction;
• Ability to prepare teaching plans, courses, activities and learning experiences for a variety of students;
• Ability to develop appropriate curriculums;
• Ability to handle problems, concerns and emotional distress with sensitivity and tact;
• Ability to utilize problem-solving techniques;
• Ability to work independently;
• Ability to understand and apply applicable rules, regulations, policies and procedures relating to classroom teaching;
• Ability to plan, establish priorities and implement activities for maximum effectiveness;

• Ability to instruct the students in the use of the proper techniques of orientation and mobility;
• Ability to attain sign language proficiency level in accordance with FSDB O.P.P.1.24;
• Ability to complete training and administer skills acquired during CPR and CPI;

• Bachelors Degree

Preferred

• FLDOE Certification, Bachelor’s degree in related field, Masters Degree

Condition of Employment

Applicants under consideration for employment at the Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind will be required to complete background investigation. Fingerprints will be taken and sent to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and the Federal Bureau of Investigation for a background check of your criminal history record(s) at the state and national level.

Sign Language Requirements

Applicants who are selected for hire will be encouraged to learn American Sign Language.

Hiring Salary Range: 10-month position, $31,418.40 – $35,918.40 annually. This range is inclusive of verified experience and education.

Hours: Monday – Friday 7:30am to 4:00pm
