Social Studies Teacher Position

Grade Level: Varying Positions, Grades 1-8

You are an experienced elementary or middle school Social Studies teacher who seeks to share your love of learning with others. Being a highly energetic and productive self-starter, you also have excellent organizational and relationship building skills, are adept at guiding students in the classroom, and support them in their extracurricular pursuits. You enjoy the rhythm and energy of an independent day school and demonstrate integrity, humor, and sound judgment in everything you do.

Star Academy for the Gifted & Talented is a pre-kindergarten through 8th grade school with two locations: Wellesley and Watertown, MA. We are hiring multiple Social Studies teachers at both locations for the 2021-2022 school year. Our mission is to “Capture curiosity. Develop potential.”

Our goal is to maximize a child’s academic and physical education opportunities during school time, so that families can have their evenings and weekends free to enjoy being together. The creators and faculty of Star Academy have the child’s interests in mind, and also value the interests of the parents. The extensive school curriculum exposes the children to many different spheres of knowledge and experiential learning during daytime – prime time for learning. As a result, many after school activities become unnecessary.

Our educational goals are based on our thoughtfully planned recognition of what the parents need for their children and what children need to succeed. We lead through core subjects especially Math, English and STEAM classes.

Star Academy seeks an educator with a demonstrated background and or interest in cultural competency, curriculum development, and technology integration. Candidates should have an understanding of the social emotional development of students in grades 1-8 (or specifically an age level within those numbers).We prefer that teachers have experience and understanding of developing literacy skills for this age group, including phonics, reading, and writing. We prefer candidates who are familiar with Pearson/ Savvas textbooks (myWorld Social Studies). The Social Studies Department is overseen by a Director of Academics who creates the curriculum for the entire program. All of our Social Studies teachers must teach identical curriculum across two campuses and multiple classrooms; however, your interpretation of those materials is open to discussion. Candidates should demonstrate strong communication and relationship building skills, flexibility, and collegiality in promoting a healthy and stimulating relationship.

Social Studies teachers will also have a homeroom section to lead during the morning, recess, and lunch. They are responsible for gathering regular report cards for this homeroom group, in addition to their teaching responsibilities. Social Studies teachers will be split into grade level sections, for example: one person might teach all upper levels of Social Studies at one location, or they might teach all younger levels across both campuses. Regular faculty and admin meetings might cause commuting to a campus that is not your regular campus.

Star’s Elementary and Middle School is a group of dynamic and motivated teachers who are passionate and intentional about teaching elementary and middle school students. Recognizing the importance of development that takes place during the elementary and middle school years, Star’s faculty members are excited to engage fully in all aspects of educating young children; supporting students in their increasing confidence, teaching them how to become self-advocates, helping them to develop a furthered understanding of how they learn, and developing valuable skills related to leadership, responsibility, and citizenship. Skills and Qualifications of an Ideal Candidate

• Bachelor’s degree (required), or higher, advanced degree preferred in the field that you are teaching

• Ability to plan, organize, develop, and conduct comprehensive lesson plans and instruction

• Ability to provide a motivating and engaging learning environment

• History of continued education or professional development in general education or assigned subject area(s) through in-service training programs or independent studies

• Ability to be flexible, effectively manage stress, and adapt to changing work priorities and assignments

• Experience working in a start-up situation is preferred. Our second location opens for the first time in 2021, and adaptability will be key.

• Ability to understand, appreciate, and adapt to culturally-specific communities is preferred.
