Classroom Assistant Job Description

The role of the Assistant is to assist the Montessori Director/Directress (Lead Teacher) in preparing, maintaining and supporting the environment in which the Montessori approach to education is implemented.

The Assistant:

Assists the Lead Teacher in the preparation and maintenance of the prepared Montessori environment, as directed.

• Is directly responsible for cleaning the environment, refilling supplies and properly storing all classroom supplies.

• Assists the Lead Teacher with the care, maintenance and repair of classroom materials, i.e., maintaining an orderly environment and keeping it clean and in good condition.

• Assists in the preparation of curriculum materials, as directed.
• Repairs materials and equipment as necessary.

Works with individual and small groups of children as directed.

• Phrases directives positively when speaking with the students.
• Shares the responsibility for the safety and physical well-being of the children at all times while at school or on school trips, both indoors and outdoors as required.

Helps maintain strong relationships with the parents, relationships characterized by mutual respect and good will, as appropriate for the assistant role.

Helps with the maintenance of current, accurate classroom records.

• Reports all accidents/incidents at once to the Lead Teacher. Prepares a written report stating date, time, nature of accident and action taken.
• Helps maintain an environment that meets or exceeds State health and safety requirements.
• Helps supervise children in the execution of fire/earthquake/disaster drills.

Attends staff meetings and school events when requested.

Assists with other projects, programs and planning as assigned or requested by the Head of School or Lead Teacher.

• Assists children with organizing work and correcting/editing completed work as directed by the Lead Teacher
• Encourages children in follow-on work as directed by Lead Teacher.

Initiates growth and change in her/her own intellectual and professional development.

Shares questions and observations with Lead Teacher.

• Is self-aware and self-monitoring in identifying and solving student, curricular and school problems in conjunction with the Teacher.

Models integrity, responsibility, creativity and respect for all persons associated with the School. Is collegial and a team player.

• Protects the privacy of the students.
• Always dresses and behaves in a professional manner
• Refrains from postings on social media or expressing personal beliefs to members of the school community which would not accord with school values.
