We house an unique collection of all forms of portraiture of the people who have made or are currently contributing to British history and culture; the collection is the most comprehensive of its kind in the world. With around 2 million visitors each year prior to temporary closure for the Inspiring People project and a strong national and international presence through touring exhibitions and special projects, the Gallery is one of the country’s most important and popular galleries. Security Systems Engineer £31,650 Full-time, 40 hours per week Fixed Term Contract for 12 months Site based We are looking for Security Systems Engineer who will play an important role in assisting in the delivery of a security systems installation at the Gallery. They will manage and develop the Gallery’s specialist integrated security systems, and manage and oversee the development of an effective and well-trained security team. The successful candidate will be extremely organised, can think on their feet, work under pressure; and have experience in rostering teams, managing annual leave requests and maintaining minimum staffing levels 24hrs a day. They will have technical management experience of working in a Security Control Room environment, in-depth knowledge of Security Management technologies and a solid understanding of the Security Systems industry and its current trends. This is an excellent opportunity for highly skilled individual to support the final stages of the Gallery’s Inspiring People project, which will see the largest investment of security system provision in the Gallery’s history.
Role Purpose
The Security Systems Engineer will play an important role with the delivery of a security systems installation and maintenance strategy, to support the Heritage Protection Manager with the overall management of security at the Gallery. The primary task of the role, working closely with the Gallery’s 24 hour Control Room team, is to install and develop specialist integrated security systems, in addition to providing subject matter expertise to ensure an industry standard maintenance regime, essential to the protection of a national Collection. The role will support the final stages of the Gallery’s Inspiring People project, which will see the largest investment of security system provision in the Gallery’s history.
Key Accountabilities
Assisting the Heritage Protection Manager with the development of a security systems and technical innovation strategy with partnership providers, which ensures that the site has industry standard protective security systems to secure both the Gallery and its visitors at all times.
Providing the Heritage Protection Manager with “subject matter expertise” for technical security system related projects.
Working closely with the Gallery’s security and fire-alarm system providers, to successfully install, configure and commission new integrated systems and to ensure that all systems, including CCTV, Access Control, Intruder Alarm, Alarms, Visitor Bookings, Radios and Fire Alarm, remain effective at all times and are maintained in line with the ongoing maintenance arrangements held with the Gallery’s external security and fire alarm system providers.
Working with the Gallery’s IT team to ensure that all security systems are configured and regularly updated, so as to comply with IP network security best practice and in line with Cyber Essentials requirements.
To develop, manage and maintain an auditable record of all technical and administration systems.
To develop and maintain a comprehensive asset register, reporting system and preventative maintenance regime of all security systems assets.
Develop a testing regime for the security systems on a regular, routine basis.
Working with the Heritage Protection Manager and IT Team, to plan regular PEN tests on security systems and identify security system vulnerabilities.
Support the Heritage Protection Manager with monthly KPI meetings with relevant security systems providers, presenting system and operational reports where required.
To draft operating Procedures for the use of all Control Room security systems and ensure annual reviews of all Standard Operating Procedures as requested by the Heritage Protection Manager and Head of Estates and Operations.
Ensuring all reported Data Incidents are logged in a timely manner and escalated to the relevant Incident Controller for assessment.
Undertaking ‘first response’ Incident Control responsibilities, in the event of an emergency, as outlined in the sites Emergency and Contingency plans.
Ensuring that appropriate recording of security clearances of contractors on visitor booking system and that records are up-to-date, drawing immediate attention to any irregularities. In addition, support the maintenance of the visitor booking system, including compliance with GDPR and in line with the Gallery’s data retention schedules.
Ensuring that effective communication exists between external contract maintenance providers and the Estates and Operations team.
Undertaking monthly security systems audits as instructed by the Heritage Protection Manager.
Having a flexible approach to working weekends and during evening hours, in the event of having to provide support cover to the Security team.
The post holder will need to undertake First-aid duties.

The postholder will be expected to demonstrate relevant knowledge and experience in relation to these aspects of the role. This job description is indicative but not exhaustive. Key Criteria for Success After 6 months in post, the successful candidate will have:
Overseen the installation, integration and commissioning of new security and fire safety systems as part of the Inspiring People Project.
Effective delivery of the Control Room’s Security and Fire Safety Systems, ensuring that all appropriate security staff are well trained in the most effective use of these systems.
Maintain and develop strong relationships with the sites security system providers, to ensure that the Gallery has industry standard and appropriately bespoke security systems, in place, at all times.
Demonstrate effective organisational and communication skills with internal stakeholders when installing any security system provision to support temporary openings, programming, temporary openings of the Gallery’s themselves.
Demonstrate a good understanding of the Gallery’s security system’s needs, with the ability to support the Heritage Protection Manager, in identifying cost effective technical solutions within tight budget constrain
