Purpose of Staff Accountant
Under the supervision of the Controller, the Staff Accountant performs various accounting and bookkeeping collection activities. An employee in this classification uses an involved accounting system and primarily and independently performs account reconciliations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Prepares monthly bank reconciliations
• Prepares month-end journal entries
• Analyze ledger accounts for accuracy
• Assists in the Housing Choice Voucher bi-monthly check run for landlord rent payments
• Responds to owner and landlord questions
• Performs other accounting and bookkeeping functions as assigned.

Position Requirements
Knowledge of:

• Defining and correcting accounting discrepancies.
• Various computer systems and programs, including Microsoft 365 products, and spreadsheeting programs.
• Written and verbal communication skills.

Ability to:

• Read, write, speak, and understand English.
• Work independently, effectively organize work, systematize procedures, and meet deadlines.
• Maintain effective working relationships.
• Use complex, accurate analytical thinking skills, and work with a great deal of detail.

Acceptable Experience and Training

• Associates Degree in Accounting or current enrollment working towards an accounting degree, and/or one year’s experience in a computerized accounting environment is required.
• Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge and abilities necessary to perform the work of a Staff Accountant-HCV.
• Must have an acceptable credit history according to SHA’s policy, and history free criminal/drug felony convictions.

Essential Physical Abilities

Physical demands include using hands to finger, handle or feel and talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to stand, walk or sit. The employee is occasionally required to reach, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl or lift. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and distance vision. The use of computer and adding machine is essential to job performance.

Sufficient clarity of speech and hearing or other communication capabilities, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to discern verbal instructions and to communicate effectively in person and on a telephone.

Work is primarily sedentary in nature. The work environment noise level is usually moderate. The employee can be exposed to outside weather conditions.

Must be able to fully function in a drug-free environment.
