About the Department:

The newly established Department of Student Strategic Initiatives is part of the Directorate of Student and Academic Services (SAS) which is based on the vision to provide holistic service, support and educative experience to all students and researchers from induction to student engagement and progression leading to successful graduate outcomes.

The Department will aim to provide a high level administrative support, advice and guidance to students, researchers and academic colleagues, so they receive expert, timely and accessible support across a wide range of activities. These will also include business operational and management support to Heads of Departments and colleagues in central professional services.

About the Role

To work as part of the Online and Distance Learning Support Team supporting the administration of student support, assessments and examinations, Tutor and academic support, with specific responsibilities for certain tasks.

SOAS has approximately 3,000 distance learning students studying post graduate qualifications in some 160 countries. Distance and online learning students are supported by a personal online tutor and students are required to submit assignments while studying and also sit an examination or submit an extended essay at the end of each module taken.

This role will mainly be responsible for supporting our Online Distance Learning areas of Development Studies and Gender & Media.

About you: You will need to demonstrate…

Essential

• Experience of high volume administrative work, preferably in an HE environment, with strict deadlines requiring complete accuracy.
• Good organisational and time management skills, with evidence of meeting deadlines under pressure
• Excellent interpersonal skills. Ability to communicate complex information clearly and accurately, both verbally and in writing, taking account of the needs of the recipient.
• Demonstrable experience in resolving day to day problems as they arise.
• Commitment to providing excellent service to students and external contractors, remaining calm and courteous under pressure while retaining objectivity and adhering to regulations and procedures.
