Sleepl is an innovative technology product company based in Scotland. We design and manufacture cool, tech-infused devices for children and adults and will launch later this year with our debut product, Sleepl Apollo, closely followed by other products designed to improve the nation’s health and wellbeing.

About the project

Sleepl Apollo is a device designed to help children improve their sleep through non-contact monitoring and industry-first insights into Sleep Disordered Breathing.

In order to make the device more engaging and attractive to young children, it includes some gamification aspects, e.g. animated characters, reward-based animations – a Tamagotchi-style user experience.

In your role, your main involvement will be to implement those gamification elements which will run on the device.

The right candidate must therefore also be proactive, eager to learn, and willing to roll up their sleeves to help the team meet its objectives. Main responsibilities

• Collaborating with designers and artists to develop designs or initial concept designs for games including game play
• Writing efficient code to implement game designs and animations (animating game characters and environment) using Pygame to be run on an embedded platform (e.g. Raspberry Pi)
• Configuring the embedded platform (e.g. Raspbian on a Raspberry Pi)
• Providing accurate time estimates for tasks and working within those constraints
• Helping as may sometimes be required on other related software projects of Sleepl (e.g. building APIs, mobile app development etc.)

Required skills

• Bachelor’s degree in computer science, software engineering, or a related field
• Minimum 3 years experience with Python (and Pygame library or other game development tools and frameworks)
• Experience working with embedded platforms (e.g. Arduino, Raspberry Pi etc.)
• Familiar with Git for source control
• Self-disciplined with the ability to learn and manage work with minimal supervision or direction
• Ability to solve complicated problems creatively and effectively
• A forward-thinking approach to work and willingness to keep learning and developing your skills
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Nice-to-have skills

• Knowledge of administration of Linux systems and shell scripting
• Previous full stack development experience
• Experience with 2D or 3D modelling and animation software
• Experience with IOT
• Familiar with SCRUM methodology
