Position Description

Research Associate

We are currently seeking a highly enthusiastic, self-organized and motivated Research Associate to join the Genetics & Genome Biology team in Toronto, Canada.

As a valuable team member, you will be responsible for applying general technical knowledge and skills to perform routine standardized laboratory research procedures in a mouse molecular genetics laboratory to study the rare neurometabolic disorder Rett syndrome.

Under the supervision of the Principal Investigator, you will determine the design and analytic methods appropriate for a research study and lead the implementation of the study. You must be willing to work with mice.

Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
Conducting research under the direction of a Faculty Member within the Research Institute.

Carrying out a research project within the group; and/or using specialized expertise or knowledge in a particular field to contribute to a team project.

Performing advanced, highly proficient scientific work such as planning and conducting a series of experiments, correlating data obtained, evaluating results, preparing and presenting reports and findings and preparing peer reviewed scientific manuscripts.

Providing direction within the research group on technical matters and remaining current on research of current principals and theories.

Mentoring students and other lab staff

Coordinating lab activities and synergizing with lab managers.

Developing and presenting material for publication using strong written, verbal and graphical communications skills with the ability to express highly complex scientific concepts effectively.

Presenting scientific outcomes to the program and research community.

Assisting the PI in preparing or reviewing grant applications and manuscripts as appropriate.

To be successful in this role you will require:
A PhD degree in relevant discipline (genetics, molecular biology, neuroscience)

Experience in working with mice

Experience in molecular biology and neuroscience techniques, including neuronal culture and immunofluorescence microscopy preferred

Computer literacy and ability to flexibly adapt new software to research problem

Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills

Possess meticulous record keeping and organizational skills

Demonstrate exceptional attention to detail and meet deadlines

Work well in an academic setting with the ability to work both independently and collaboratively

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience

Term: 1.5 yrs

Hours of Work: 35-hour work week

Start Date: Immediately
