Position Description
We are seeking highly qualified candidates for a Data Analyst position on Dr. Catherine Birken’s research team at the Research Institute of the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, Canada. Under the supervision of Dr. Birken (Senior Scientist, SickKids RI and Department of Paediatrics), the Data Analyst will become a core member of a research group in TARGet Kids! that aims to build the evidence for preventive health for children. https://www.targetkids.ca/ The Data Analyst will be primarily responsible for analysis of data collection instruments, data analysis, and interpretation of findings related to studies. The successful applicant will have daily interactions with a community of researchers, clinicians, and trainees focused on preventive child health.
The focus of the work will be analysis of existing data collected for the purpose of examining the impact of COVID-19 emergency measures on the mental health of children and families. Data collection started in April 2020 and has been ongoing. As such, there is time preference for analyses to be completed in order to inform ongoing efforts to support children and families during the pandemic. This position will be housed within the TARGet Kids! cohort team, Child Health Evaluative Sciences, and SickKids Research Institute. However, the project requires close collaboration and joint data collection among four cohorts – two clinical and two community samples – associated with the SickKids Center for Brain and Mental Health and Neurosciences, Mental Health Program at SickKids Research Institute, and Department of Psychiatry, Hospital for Sick Children. Clinicians and Researchers Dr. Alice Charach and Dr. Katherine Cost are leading the mental health focus in TARGet Kids! and will be providing supervision.
Here’s What You’ll Get To Do:
Formulation of data creation and analysis plans.
Data quality monitoring, and preparation of data summaries for investigator meetings.
Data management and cleaning, analysis, and presentation of results in tables and figures, and preparation of manuscripts for submission to peer-reviewed research journals.
Contribute to maintaining a database of questionnaires and other health data collection instruments.
Enhance quality of electronic data management system by testing study-specific software and documenting, reporting, and wherever possible, resolving coding-related issues.
Liaise with external data sources such as from ICESs resolve software and questionnaire-related issues.
Literature searches and creation of literature summaries.
Assist with the preparation of new related research proposals and grant applications (e.g., sample size calculations and justifications), research ethics board submissions, and study materials (e.g., data collection forms).
Assist and mentor students, research assistants, etc. with statistical analyses.
Attend relevant meetings, rounds or workshops to increase knowledge and skills.
Work as part of a team of clinical researchers and be involved in all aspects of the research process, from proposal development and data analysis to manuscript writing.
Develop projects in collaboration with research team focussing on mental health outcomes for children and parents, examining the impact of emergency measures, health behaviours, and the context of educational experiences as well as social determinants of health.
Here’s What You’ll Need
MSc, or MSc as of this academic year (or other thesis-based graduate degree) in a discipline related to health research and quantitative data analysis. Applicants with formal training in biostatistics or epidemiological study design and analysis are strongly preferred.
Evidence of advanced quantitative health data analysis skills, including longitudinal design, coursework and practical experience.
Previous direct involvement in the analysis, interpretation and reporting of a clinical or epidemiological research study (evidenced by acknowledgement or co-authorship on published research articles). Co-authorship as the primary research analyst on at least one published research paper would be an asset.
Basic to intermediate knowledge in computer scripting languages would be considered an asset.
Advanced proficiency with a statistical software application (preferably R, Stata, SAS)
Ability to work independently.
Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Demonstrated interest in and/or work experience related to mental health and/or early child development.
Employment Type: Temporary, Full-Time (1 Year contract with possibility of renewal)
