The Role
As a business analyst you will work collaboratively to understand the business, identify business problems, and then look for and/or develop a solution to meet the business needs. You will work hand in hand with business service designers and business architects to undertake discoveries to identify user needs and to shape a successful design that meets the business’s strategy.
Main Responsibilities
Lead and manage investigations into business processes, information systems, functions, information flows, data structures and software development processes, using various technical, methodical, and consistent techniques.
Able to lead the analysis in a business discovery to determine the internal and external user needs.
Review existing system capabilities, develop use cases and information models, and align business requirements to specific capabilities of system development, including working with developers to ensure that user needs are met.
Define improvements to business processes, developing business cases to enable decisions to be made based on the benefits of the change.
Lead, understand and communicate the project scope and work to assure the overall goal is maintained in creation of the product backlog.
Lead in providing solutions to real business problems through influence, facilitation and communication and ensuring the end-to-end process is considered.
Shape and challenge business priorities and ways of working through collaboration with business and technology teams.
Elicit functional and non-functional requirements using appropriate techniques, considering the nature of change and established practices.
Deliver at pace using agile methodologies and principles.
Develop suitable analysis models using appropriate modelling techniques, considering traceability, adherence to business objectives and fitness for purpose.
Work with business and enterprise architects to ensure that the wider architecture considered when undertaking analysis work.
Assist decision makers in gathering information to make informed decisions.
Promote a culture of assurance and security.
Help to quality assure test solutions and products.
Actively collaborate with other business analysts to refine and develop standards, working practices, sharing of knowledge, and understanding.
Line management of other business analysts.
Person Specification
Skills And Experience
Business analysts understand and analyse user and business needs. They ensure outcomes are aligned with service vision and business strategy by contributing to the link between current and future business models and delivering to the business architecture. They challenge constructively and act as a critical friend to achieve solutions that are fit for purpose. They facilitate collaboration and lead effective communication with all stakeholders to support design, build and delivery to meet the user needs.
Requirement Gathering – Coordinate requirement activities, their validation and sign-off ensuring that the needs of the key stakeholders are articulated determining the need and value of performing the activity based on the context.
Stakeholder management and engagement – Coordinate Stakeholder analysis and comms with project and Comms team and ensure that stakeholder management is an ongoing process.
Facilitation – Liaise with business owners, business architects, business users, change and technical teams to identify solutions.
Strategic thinking – able to work with uncertainty and work with a Business Architect and the business to understand the problem and help shape a clear problem statement with defined metrics of success, during discovery phases.
Benefit Analysis – Coordinate and lead on ensuring that identified benefits analysis is developed and disseminated to project sponsors, senior managers, and project stakeholders where applicable.
Gap Analysis – Coordinate and lead on the evaluation of requirements against the present state (where we are) & the target state (where we want to be) and identify opportunities to develop successful business requirements as well as cultivate stakeholder relationships needed to make the transition.
Impact Analysis – Lead on ensuring that the potential consequences of a change are correctly identified that stakeholders have been identified and are part of the overall process and that benefits have been collated in response to the impact analysis.
Business Improvement – Lead on the work with Business Improvement teams on business readiness and the identification of business as usual (BAU) enhancements and their solutions to ensure that defined project benefits are delivered.
Process Modelling – Determine requirement for and develop, coordinate and agree sign-off of the ‘As-Is’ and To-Be’ business process work.
Business Solution Design – Coordinate change with policy and strategy to ensure business systems, workflows and processes contribute to target operating model.
Delivery Products Tools and Documentation – Coordinate development and application of frameworks; application of methodologies; operating model/ target operating model; functional specification; user cases; user stories; etc.
Assurance and Quality – Apply recognised methodologies; audit test and quality gates; review deliverables from team & releases.
Essentials
Proven experience of process modelling
Demonstrable experience of gap analysis
Expert at requirement gathering (tested at interview stage via a presentation)
Facilitation skills, such as workshop facilitation
Stakeholder management and engagement
Desirable
Experience of working as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
