Seeing Machines is a world leader in driver-machine interaction. We harness human factors science to create artificial intelligence (AI) technology that observes the driver’s attention – reliably, unobtrusively, and in real time – and intervenes seamlessly when necessary.

Specialised computer vision algorithms underpin Seeing Machines’ core camera-based driver monitoring technology. Algorithms allow us to precisely track eye gaze, head position and pupil size while our state-of-the-art AI technology analyses the data to quickly and accurately detect driver drowsiness, distraction and microsleep levels. We work with some of the world’s leading brands to deliver this technology, helping keep drivers and operators engaged across commercial transport and logistics, automotive, aviation, rail and mining industries.

• The American Automobile Association says that 1 in every 10 auto accidents in the US is fatigue related and that 25% of US car accidents are caused by distraction.
• European Commission recommends that camera-based driver monitoring technology be mandated to enhance safety in cars, vans, trucks, and buses from 2022.
• Air traffic is set to double over 15 years and the world’s aviation fleet is set to double in 20 years. This creates a huge demand for more pilots and air traffic management which increases pressure on training and safety frameworks for the aviation industry, globally.

About the opportunity

As an intern within the Software Engineering department, you will help the Software Engineering team “work smarter” by spending 12 weeks contributing to one or more of the following: tooling, automation, CI systems, product improvements. In doing so you will be giving a boost to one or more high performing project teams delivering world-class computer vision technology to a range of global automotive and aviation manufacturers.

About you

Essential

• an interest in embedded software development, or wiliness to learn
• Undergraduate (or graduate) in a Bachelor Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent tertiary qualification
• strong problem-solving skills and analytical ability
• strong communication skills (verbal and written)
• positive attitude
• attention to detail

Desirable

• experience writing C and/or C++
• experience with scripting languages such as Python
• experience working with hardware

Below are some examples of exciting projects you could be assisting us with:

• Automated computational benchmarking pipelines, using Python, Jenkins, board bring-up, hardware setup, and Linux
• Automated performance analysis and reporting of embedded algorithms, using Jenkins, Grafana, data processing, Linux, Python
• Building computational analysis tools, using Python, SoC vendor toolchains (e.g. from TI, Qualcomm)
• Improvements to “Fovio Client”, SM’s primary technology visualization and demonstration software, using C++, Qt, Bazel
• HIL automation and tooling improvements, using C, Python, Makefiles, SoCs
• Setup and configuration of an test automation framework of embedded devices, working with hardware, using bash/shell scripting, and collaborating with DevOps team
• Automation of engineering project metric reporting, using Jama Connect, REST APIs, Python, Excel
• Automation of user documentation from Jama Connect, using Python and REST API
• CI automation of Static Analysis and Code Coverage Analysis tooling, with Klocwork, CTC++, Jenkins, Groovy, Bazel
• DevOps CI system issue diagnosis and resolution, across a range of embedded software, using Python, Jenkins, Nexus, Prometheus, Grafana, AWS, Github
• Enhancing the robustness of SM technology through software design retrofitting and/or unit-testing, using C++, Perforce, Github, Crucible, Enterprise Architect, Jama, code reviews
