The key purpose of the People Advice and Wellbeing Team is to empower and build capacity in our leaders, staff and managers to enable them to create the culture where that ambition can be embraced and delivered.
The team provides dedicated HR support and advice to colleagues across the organisation in order to ensure fair and consistent advice, with a focus on wellbeing and inclusion of colleagues and on resolution of issues as the earliest possible opportunity.
The team focuses on ensuring that the SG employee experience is a positive one; ensuring the translation of policy into practice is effective, consistent and appropriately takes account of individual circumstances and reflects the Fair Work principles and status of the SG.
There are circa 30 staff in the team supporting a diverse range of business areas across the Scottish Government which are located throughout Scotland.
Responsibilities:
Support the People Advice and Wellbeing team’s approach to early intervention and wellbeing by providing expert advice and support to managers and staff at all levels on HR issues (informal and formal) including: performance management; sickness absence; discipline; fairness at work and resourcing – liaising effectively with HR policy colleagues, legal and other HR colleagues as appropriate.
Manage the investigation and resolution of formalised employee relations issues such as discipline, Fairness at Work, performance and attendance.
Working closely with the People Advice and Wellbeing Manager and the business area to understand Directorate and Divisional people challenges, pressures and priorities. Build capability in the business area by working closely with managers and staff to identify and resolve issues through early intervention.
Work with the People Advice and Wellbeing Manager and the business area on the delivery of the wellbeing strategy by supporting managers as they work to improve culture, staff wellbeing and organisational and personal resilience.
Support the People Advice Directorate’s policy work by contributing to policy reviews and ensuring policies are designed with an inclusion and wellbeing focus.

Essential Criteria
1. Recent experience of managing HR cases within a demanding and diverse environment. You must be able to use evidence to assess risk and to develop innovative solutions which deliver a successful outcome for all.
2. Excellent interpersonal and communication (written and verbal) skills, with an ability to communicate persuasively, defend decisions, negotiate with confidence and work collaboratively.
3. Evidence of sound decision making based on evidence, legislative requirements application of policies and procedures and best practice.
4. Proven planning and organisational skills, as well as the ability to respond quickly to new demands, work across teams and manage competing priorities and tasks.
