Position Summary

The mission of Graduate Life and Diversity is to support all
graduate students’ success and promote diversity, equity, and
inclusion in our graduate programs at SDSU. They offer various
personal, professional, financial, and social resources to enrich
the graduate experience and promote success in graduate
training.

Under the supervision of the Executive Director for Graduate Life
and Diversity, the Graduate Student Advisor has responsibility for
providing consultation, guidance, mentorship, leadership, and
support, through programming and advising efforts. The incumbent in
this position also provides back-up generalist support to the
Executive Director and Assistant Director of Graduate and Life
Diversity in support of retention, academic excellence, and
enhancement of graduation rates. The incumbent is responsible for
the completion of program-related tasks or projects assigned by the
appropriate administrator.

address systemic inequities through professional learning,
community building, advocacy, policy recommendations and

Full-time, temporary position anticipated to end on or before June
30, 2023, with the possibility of reappointment. This position is
designated non-exempt under FLSA and is eligible for overtime
compensation. Standard SDSU work hours are Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m.
to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.

This position is physically located at the SDSU Main Campus in San
Diego.

Education and Experience

Experience: Possession of the knowledge and
abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent of two
years of professional experience in one of the student services
program areas or in a related field; experience should give
evidence of competence and indicate the potential for further
growth. A master’s degree in a job-related field may be substituted
for one year of professional experience.

Education: Equivalent to graduation from a
four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences,
public or business administration or a job-related field.
Additional specialized experience during which the applicant has
acquired and successfully applied the knowledge and abilities shown
above may be substituted for the required education on a
year-for-year basis.

Preferred Qualifications

• One year of professional experience in university-based student
  activities, student development, leadership education, or civic
  education/community service programs.
• One year experience working with large diverse student
  population.
• Experience in event planning, coordination and implementation
  of programs and activities.
• Effective interpersonal skills required to build and maintain
  cooperative working relationships among diverse individuals and
  groups.
• Experience in program development of student organizations and
  activities.

Specialized Skills Required

• Thorough knowledge of campus services and the concerns of
  graduate students
• Working knowledge of other student and academic affairs
  departments including Student Government, Counseling and
  Psychological Services, Career Services, Student Abilities
  Services, International Student Center, Enrollment Services, and
  Advising and Evaluations.
• Ability to identify problems or potential problems and to
  formulate and implement procedures to effect problem resolution and
  program revisions as needed.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities and tasks
  simultaneously.
• Ability to work under tight time frames and be flexible.
• Ability to maintain confidential material with utmost
  sensitivity.
• Experience in event planning, coordination, implementation, and
  evaluation.
• Demonstrated ability to create programs that are responsive to
  a diverse and multicultural
• environment.
• Ability to develop and maintain cooperative working
  relationships with a variety of
• individuals with diverse priorities and motivations.
• Strong interpersonal skills.
• Strong oral and written communication skills.
• Proven commitment to ethical and appropriate use of
  resources.
• A high degree of initiative, judgment, and resourcefulness in
  carrying out assigned areas of
• responsibilities.
• Strong commitment to working as part of a team.
• Ability to work late hours, evenings, and weekends.

Compensation and Benefits

Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and
qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal
equity, and the hiring department’s fiscal resources.
Starting salary upon appointment is not expected to exceed
$4,304 per month.

CSU Classification Salary Range: $4,304 – $6,120 per month.

SDSU Vaccine Policy

In accordance with the California State University systemwide
policy, students, faculty, and staff must be fully vaccinated
against COVID-19 or provide a valid medical or religious exemption
to access campus. Individuals are considered fully vaccinated for
five months after their final dose of a two-dose COVID-19 vaccine
or for two months after receiving the only dose of a single-dose
vaccine. Afterward a COVID-19 booster is required to continue to be
considered fully vaccinated.

The individual hired into this role will be required to submit
their completed vaccination documentation to the university’s
secure online health portal prior to beginning work. Individuals
with an approved medical or religious exemption on file with the
university will be required to participate in SDSU’s COVID-19
testing program.
