Overview
The Environmental Biotechnology Lab at SDSU is working to develop
new biotechnology solutions to advance energy and resource recovery
from wastewater. To support the development, scaling, and
optimization of these new systems, fundamental scientific
discoveries are needed to better engineer effective microbial
communities. This research project is funded by the National
Science Foundation and will support a student to use emerging
genetic engineering tools to elucidate the interactions between
microorganisms in a biofilm.
Using genetic engineering tools to study microbial interactions
within energy and resource recovery systems. The San Diego State
University (SDSU) Environmental Biotechnology Lab has an opening
for an incoming Graduate Assistant student
position for the Joint Doctoral Program between SDSU and UCSD,
starting Fall 2023. Students will take coursework at University of
California San Diego (UCSD) and work as a research assistant in the
SDSU Environmental Biotechnology Lab.
Responsibilities
Under immediate supervision, the Graduate Assistant will assist
with various professional and technical duties associated generally
with the subjects or programs in which the assistant is doing
graduate work. This work should not take precedence over the
successful completion of the graduate degree program. Assignments
may be clerical or administrative in nature or technical and/or
research focused which may be conducted in a laboratory or in the
field.
Typical assignments may involve providing lead work direction to
undergraduate students, research assistants and volunteers;
providing assistance to students in a classroom, laboratory or
workshop; training students in the use of equipment or other
resources; assisting faculty/PI’s with the preparation of course
materials. Assists faculty/PI’s who are conducting research by
collecting and arranging data, developing source materials,
summarizing reports, searching the literature and compiling
bibliographies, developing and operating research equipment,
preparing and caring for research materials, assisting in the
conduct of experiments, etc.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications & Education
Equivalent to completion of a bachelor’s degree and registration in
an SDSU graduate degree program.
