Overview: The Patient Education Specialist is a remote-based role accountable for providing education to patients to ensure they have patient-relevant disease information as well as an appropriate understanding of the clinical profile. This is a complex position requiring coordination with account managers to facilitate alignment and to ensure patients are supported throughout their journey in a most appropriate, compassionate, ethical and compliant way. The Patient Education Specialist will be the first point of contact for PKU* patients who are obtaining resources to support their PKU journey. This position requires strong communication skills to discuss the PKU disease state and then connect the patient with an account manager to provide further information regarding potential treatment options.

PKU (phenylketonuria) is an autosomal recessive genetic metabolic disorder that greatly reduces the ability of those affected to metabolize phenylalanine, one of the amino acids in protein. A buildup of phenylalanine (phe) in the blood can cause profound damage to the central nervous system in children and adults. If untreated in newborns, PKU can cause irreversible brain damage within months. Lifelong treatment is required to prevent neurological and physical deterioration.

Responsibilities: Main Responsibilities & Expectations:

• Lead efforts to provide patient-relevant disease-state and treatment education to patients.
• Utilize motivational interviewing skills to empower patients to advocate for their own PKU health needs.
• Proficient communication with patients and internal stakeholders. Use of internet-based platforms for meetings with patients.
• Become an expert in PKU and be able to verbalize its significance to others.
• Provide, proactively and in response to requests, relevant, approved patient-oriented disease/product information.
• Respect the privacy of patients and their caregivers/families and manage all personal information in accordance with all laws, regulations and policies.
• Act in full compliance with all laws, regulations and policies.
• Utilize only approved resources and messages to perform function responsibilities.

Qualifications:

• Education as an allied health care professional, Registered Dietitian desired
• Pharmaceutical experience as a patient educator desired
• 4+ years of direct patient care experience in rare disease desired
• Bachelor’s degree in Allied Health preferred or work experience equivalent
