Position Purpose

To oversee all aspects of the preparation of the company’s financial reporting packages, including STAT and IFRS reports. Responsible for the maintenance of controls in investment accounting and financial reporting. Ensure that internal departments are communicating appropriately and that all departments are trained, where appropriate regarding current accounting rules. Ensure compliance with State Insurance Departments, Internal Revenue Service, and State Department of Revenue rules and regulations. Provide support to outside professionals and the Sr. Financial Analyst, Tax where necessary for the preparation and completion of the Company’s corporate tax returns.

Duties/Responsibilities

• Significant job functions include oversight of the following:

• IFRS/STAT financial statement preparation and reporting – all aspects
• IFRS QTR and annual US consolidated package including DNs – owns majority of DNs, coordinates rest
• STAT QTR and annual statement, exhibits and notes
• All disbursement approval (expense and policyholder related)
• Review & reconciliation IFRS CALM and STAT liabilities
• Review and approve investment accounting and journal entries
• Approve calculation of tax provision
• Review and approve hedge accounting
• Audit coordination (PwC)

• Design, establish, and maintain an organizational structure and staffing to effectively accomplish the department’s goals and objectives. Establish and implement short- and long-range departmental goals, objectives, policies, and operating procedures.
• Responsible for personnel hiring, training and reviews within the department and assist in decisions regarding proper allocation of work in department.
• Through direct reports:
• Manage and maintain the Company’s period-end close data, and audit trails. Confirm that all reports are directly supported by the GL, other business systems, spreadsheets, or external parties.
• Provide accurate, up-to-date reports from general ledger data. Solicit process owners to ensure that reports are usable and meet the Company’s needs; and provide sufficient design and testing effort to ensure integrity of such reports. Prepare ad hoc reports as requested.
• Facilitate reporting portion of GL close activities: coordinate with finance personnel in the fulfillment of all ledger closing activities; prepare all defined and ad hoc necessary journal entries (accruals, actual, adjustments, and corrections); and oversee maintenance of monthly close calendar.
• Ensure completion of all financial reporting requirements accurately and in a timely manner.
• Ensure completion of annual and quarterly statements as well as supplemental filing to the state insurance departments.
• Coordinate PwC external financial audits.
• Ensure completion of all financial statement reporting for IFRS.
• Ensure completion of STAT to IFRS reconciliation.
• Ensure completion of monthly reports for presentation to senior management.
• Ensure completion of state financial insurance examinations as required.
• Review IRIS ratios and RBC calculations and prepare explanations.
• Supervise and coordinate the services of outside accounting and tax consultants.
• Maintain and enhance policies, procedures, and controls. Articulate and champion process improvement. Plan and execute system upgrades. Carry out special projects as assigned
• Assist the CFO in reviewing potential acquisitions and ensuring the proper accounting for those that are acquired.
• Required to complete 8 hours of community service.

Qualifications

• Bachelors degree with 10 or more years accounting experience.
• CPA certification.
• Life insurance experience, including statutory and GAAP financial reporting.
• Considerable experience in managing others – good leadership skills.
• Comprehensive knowledge of advanced accounting theory and principles of Statutory accounting practices and procedures. Knowledge of IFRS accounting practices and procedures a positive.
• Creativity – ability to develop innovative solutions to problems.
• Excellent communication, presentation, organizational, interpersonal, analytical and supervisory skills.
• Must hold a valid passport within one year of expiration.
