Salary: £39,748
Grade: UKRI – E
Location: Bristol
Hours: Full time (part time 0.8 FTE will be considered)
Contract type: Fixed term, 1 year

The Research Excellence Framework (REF) is the system for assessing the quality of research in UK higher education institutions, with the most recent exercise concluding in 2014. HEFCE delivered REF 2014 on behalf of the four UK funding bodies and the results have driven the annual distribution of approximately £2 billion of research funding to UK universities.

The REF software developer will deliver the software components of the REF IT systems.

Key responsibilities:

  • Develop software to meet REF user needs
  • Follow best practice guidelines and help to improve those guidelines
  • Write clean, secure and well-tested code
  • Coach and mentor more junior colleagues
  • Operate the services they build and identify issues in production
  • Build accessible interfaces to web services to serve a variety of REF needs, taking responsibility for the quality of code you produce
  • Build RESTful web services to serve a variety of REF needs, taking responsibility for the quality of code you produce
  • Build automated tests to support our continuous deployment environment
  • Share knowledge of tools and techniques with your wider team, both developers and non-developers
  • Participate in-house (2nd line) support.

About you

For the REF Software Developer role it is essential that you have:

  • Experience in front-end and/or back-end development, with detailed knowledge of at least one programming language:
    • For back-end development you will need C# for front-end development you need CSS and HTML skills, as well as being comfortable with Javascript and JavaScript frameworks
  • Understanding of software design principles
  • Ability to quickly research and learn new programming tools and techniques
  • Systematic approach to solving problems
  • Experience of using testing to validate solutions
  • Understanding of agile environments and version control
  • Understanding of information security
  • An awareness of technologies used for web applications, e.g databases, backups, CDNs and search, and of Windows operating systems, and experience of working on, or with web technologies.

About Research England

Research England is one of the nine Councils within UK Research and Innovation. As a key component of the research funding system, Research England will oversee UKRI’s England-only functions in relation to university research and knowledge exchange (KE). This includes providing grant funding to English universities for related activities; developing and implementing the Research Excellence Framework in partnership with the UK Higher Education funding bodies; supervising the sustainability of the Higher Education research base in England; guide the UK Research Partnership Investment Fund; and coordinate the Higher Education Innovation Fund (HEIF). Research England will build and sustain the conditions for a healthy and dynamic research and KE system in English universities. They also work closely with their counterparts in the Devolved Administrations.
