As a Software Engineer Apprentice you will be rotated around our various projects giving you a breadth and depth of skills in various topics, programming languages, methodologies and tools complimenting skills acquired through your studies.
Your development will be regularly reviewed and supported by both Raytheon and an appointed mentor at Staffordshire University, to allow you to be supported and continuously learn. Apprentices will spend 4 days in every 12 weeks onsite at Staffordshire University (all costs covered by Raytheon), with the remaining 11 weeks spent hybrid working with onsite at Raytheon UK’s Gloucester or Manchester office.
Your time will be split between real projects with at least one day a week set aside for learning from multiple sources which will include:
One-on-one mentorship from Senior Software Engineers
A variety of online courses
Individual research and learning into new technologies
Dedicated time to focus on university work
Responsibilities
During your apprenticeship you will works across numerous areas of Software Development with the focus being on continuing your learning so you can confidently perform the duties of a Software Engineer.
With your time split between dedicated learning time and on the job learning that will consist of:
Participating in daily meetings and stand ups with engineering teams
Software Development – working on a range of tickets likely alongside other engineers or independently as your confidence grows
Software Testing and understanding the full Software development lifecycle
Supporting work estimation activities
We use a broad range of software and infrastructure languages, however, you can expect to cover and learn include:
JavaScript/Typescript – MERN stack, including frameworks such as Angular, React
Python including FastAPI and Swagger
Cloud based technologies such as AWS, Azure
Infrastructure programming such as Terraform, Ansible & Chef
Relational and non-relational Databases
Architectural design principles
Requirements
The successful role holder could be somebody with an interest in technology and some software experience such as:
Creating and maintaining a website
Developed a game
Online courses
Tech blogs
Github or StackOverflow profiles
Software development Bootcamps
Some of our engineers took a non-traditional route to software engineering. So, you could be somebody with interests that require an analytical and logical mind-set such as languages or music.
Analytical and inquisitive mind-set
A curiosity around all things tech
Appetite for self-learning
The ability to work within a team setting and independently as required
Strong communication and interpersonal skills
Required Qualifications:
GCSEs in Maths and English at grade 4/C or above
A-Levels or equivalent (BTEC) at C or above
You must be willing to go through SC clearance with the aim of progressing to DV clearance
Future Prospects
Over the course of the Apprenticeship you will work closely with Senior Engineers and will see your level of work and responsibilities grow as you continue to learn supported by both the Raytheon team and Staffordshire University.
Once you have completed your Level 6 apprenticeship, we hope that you will wish to continue your Software Engineering career with Raytheon, with the long-term opportunity to continue to learn and work with new technologies and take on more Senior Software Engineering positions – maybe even helping mentor our Apprentices of the future!

All successful applicants must be eligible & willing to obtain a SC clearance with the view to progressing to DV level which would be sponsored by Raytheon UK.
