Software Engineer

£50,000 – £60,000 plus benefits including 30 days holiday, bonus & enhanced pension contribution

Quantum Detectors is a spinout from STFC and Diamond Light Source, based at Harwell Campus. We develop advanced detector technology for the X-ray and electron microscopy markets. Our cutting edge products are installed at prestigious research facilities all over the world.

Working within the R&D team, the software engineer will take ownership of creating, improving and maintaining software for use with our detector systems. The software engineer is required to work on two exciting new detector projects in our Electron Microscopy product family. The ideal candidate will have development experience in C, C++ and be a hands-on individual who will treat new challenges as opportunities to shine.

The position requires close interaction with a range of existing staff with different specialisms, so good communication skills are essential.

Key responsibilities:

• Develop software for new detector systems (drivers, API)
• Maintain, develop and improve software
• Create technical specifications for software and hardware
• Generate excellent documentation
• Make astute technical decisions and be the subject matter expert
• Continually update technical knowledge
• Interact with other technical experts in hardware, software and electronics

Essential qualifications and experience:

• Degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics or related field
• C++, C and associated toolchains
• Comfortable using IDE and command line tools
• Experience using Git
• Ability to write the core content for user guides and manuals
• Good interpersonal skills and communication
• Ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary team

Desirable experience:

• Networking including IP, UDP, TCP
• Design for unit and system test
• Additional languages: Python, Javascript
• Experience working with scientific instrumentation
• Experience with C++ standard library (memory management, file system)
• Familiarity with Qt

This permanent full-time position offers a 35-hour working week with flexible working hours, 30 days holiday and a generous pension contribution.
