The Literacy Instructional Coach position is a critical support for strong literacy instruction in grades K – 6. The Literacy Coach works closely with individuals or teams, collaboratively setting goals for strengthening daily instructional practice and then supporting teachers toward those goals. This support involves weekly meetings, observations and debriefs, and the collection and analysis of both teacher practice and student learning data. The coach works closely with teachers to build their capacity to design and implement learning experiences that are engaging, appropriately rigorous, culturally responsive, and aligned to both research and the curriculum standards and frameworks. The coach helps teachers deepen their understanding of the current research, as well as its implications for effective instruction, in addition to supporting effective use of the literacy curriculum. The coach will consult at regular intervals with campus leaders and will collaborate closely with K-6 instructional leaders and other coaches. While coaching focuses on adult learning, it is always in service of supporting strong literacy development for students.

Essential Functions:

• Coach teachers using research-based coaching strategies aligned with Prospect Hill’s coaching model, including observations & debriefs, modeling, co-planning, and co-teaching

• Collaborate with teachers and administrators to set clear, measurable, and attainable improvement goals for instructional practice during each coaching cycle; use data to inform coaching priorities

• Pair directly with 8-10 teachers per coaching cycle to provide regular and targeted feedback on identified areas for instructional growth and improvement, as well as to support growth in those areas

• Provide job-embedded professional development for teachers through the modeling of effective, student-centered teaching aligned to the school’s instructional program, values and priorities

• Work with teachers to: 1) ensure the alignment of their instruction to the appropriate learning standards, curriculum and assessments; 2) analyze student data, diagnose instructional needs, and identify most effective instructional strategies to address unfinished learning; 3) deepen understanding of both research and instructional tools and approaches

• Work with other instructional leaders to identify and design professional learning next steps for literacy instruction at the campus, grade and teacher level ; support and/or lead literacy professional learning experiences

• Collaborate regularly with other instructional coaches and participate fully in ongoing professional development to extend instructional competencies and coaching strategies

Additional Functions:

• Support district professional development initiatives throughout the summer and school year, including the New Faculty/Staff Institute

• Serve as a member of the campus-based instructional leadership team

• Serve as a member of the district-based academic leadership team

• Support identification of students for the Summer Learning Program and support teachers participating in the program during the SLP Orientation

• Additional responsibilities and tasks requested or assigned by manager

Knowledge, Skills and Experience Required:

• A minimum of 5 years of teaching experience, with a record of successfully impacting student achievement and prior experience in teacher-leadership positions

• Master’s Degree preferred, Bachelor’s Degree required

• Understanding and familiarity with the Massachusetts Literacy Curriculum Frameworks and the current research base in early literacy development

• Experience adapting curriculum to better meet student needs (experience with EL ELA a plus)

• Experience coaching preferred; familiarity with the work of Elena Aguilar a plus

Physical Requirements:

• Frequent sitting, standing, walking, reaching with hands and arms to stoop, kneel, or crouch

• Regularly required to operate a computer and other office equipment with hands and arms, and must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds.

• Frequent lifting and/or moving up to 10 pounds and occasionally lifting and/or moving up to 25 pounds.

• Occasional use of hands to handle or feel
