Position Summary

Princeton University Library Special Collections seeks an innovative and collaborative Librarian for Graphic Arts. The Librarian will acquire and teach with graphic arts materials, often in conjunction with the Marquand Library of Art & Archaeology. They will champion access to Princeton’s outstanding Graphic Arts Collection, which began in 1940 when Elmer Adler brought his collection to Princeton as an experiment in the study and teaching. They will engage diverse audiences through classroom teaching, cataloging initiatives, exhibitions, and digital projects at the University and beyond. The Librarian will also engage proactively with practitioners of the graphic arts, and work to expand the diversity of the collection, and advance equitable collection practices, in collaboration with diverse local and international stakeholders in ways that facilitate the practice of the graphic arts at the University by faculty and students.

Primary Responsibilities

• Collaborates with faculty and Library specialists to provide instruction.

• Collaborates on acquisitions that support the Library’s educational mission.

• Promotes donor relations and manages gifts.

• Collaborates with Special Collections (SC) Public Services to provide on-site and remote reference for all users, including item-specific analysis, collection history, and digital access.

• Contributes to SC outreach activities, developing content for blogs, presentations, and tours.

• Prepares content for exhibitions; collaborates on all aspects of exhibition work.

• Partners with SC Technical Services on acquisitions, accessioning, arrangement and description, and collections management, and with Cataloging and Metadata Services on cataloging; attends to issues of copyright and confidentiality.

• Collaborates with Preservation and Conservation in the safekeeping of the Graphic Arts collections; assists in emergency response situations.

• Represents SC across campus, in professional organizations, and multi-institutional projects; shares research in conferences and publications.

Essential Qualifications

• Advanced degree in a relevant field with demonstrated engagement in primary sources and original works of art.

• Minimum five years of work experience with special collections.

• Experience identifying and analyzing graphic printing techniques, photographic processes, and materials including artists’ books, posters, and other printed ephemera.

• Practical experience in the book arts.

• Excellent communication and presentation skills.

• Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and active engagement with a diverse community of faculty, staff, patrons, students, and the broader public.

• Demonstrated service orientation and initiative, flexibility, and willingness to learn new technologies and scholarly communication trends.

Salary Range: $83,000-$100,000.
