Overview

The Director of University Services
Information Technology leads the effort to offer onsite computing
support to the whole of University Services under the leadership of
the Executive Director while enhancing the mission and vision of
University Services, which will benefit the Princeton University
campus community.

Chartered in 1746, Princeton University
currently has enrolled approximately 7,900 students (5,300
undergraduates and 2,600 graduate students) and employs
approximately 6,100 benefits-eligible employees. University
Services focuses on providing high quality, integrated services to
the University community. The departments of Campus Dining, Campus
Support Services (Instructional Support Services, Performing Arts
Services, Venue Services), Conference and Event Services and
University Scheduling, Housing and Real Estate Services, Print and
Mail Services, The Service Point (integrated customer service
center), Talent and Organizational Development, Transportation and
Parking Services, and University Services Administration (which
includes Finance, Communications, and Information Technology) are
housed within University Services. The mission of University
Services is to provide centralized services that support the unique
needs of the campus’ living, learning, teaching and research
communities.

The Director will oversee the increasingly
complex IT environment of University Services. The Director for
Information Technology for University Services will provide
strategic direction and manage the computer resources of Princeton
University Services including hardware and software. The Director
will provide expert technical, security and information technology
(IT) asset management for University Services. The Director will
establish and execute computing security and function policies,
direct the IT technical staff and strategic IT planning/budgeting
process, and integrate University Service’s IT infrastructure into
that of the University. He/she will lead the University Services
data analytics initiatives, enabling departments to set
departmental goals, evaluate results, improve decision making, and
gain real time insight into operations. The Director is responsible
for maintaining relationship with varying constituents, both
internal and external.

This position reports directly to the
Executive Director for University Services and oversees a
department of six. In addition, there are three staff who have a
dotted line reporting relationship with the Director. The Director
will need to be a strategic thinker that can translate University
Services business goals and vision into IT functionality and
support.

Responsibilities

IT Resource Management

Oversee and maintain all computer
resources within University Services.
Manage all aspects of data
administration and security, hardware support and maintenance,
documentation, computer and auxiliary operations, and quality
assurance.
Ensure all information systems
products meet standards and user requirements.
In collaboration with OIT, plan and
implement necessary controls and procedures to protect systems and
data from modification, disclosure or security breaches.
Oversee the development and
maintenance of systems, programming, and operations
documentation.
Promote and maintain standards for
security conscious awareness and behavior. The Director must
maintain complete up to date knowledge of university’s
security-related policies, programs, and services and ensure the
proper dissemination and training of security related information
to staff and clients.
Review Continuity of Operations
Plans for each unit to ensure that the technology components of
each plan are adequate and where needed, collaborate with Directors
to develop and enhance the technology sections of such plans.
Work with direct reports to ensure
consistency of standards and policies and to ensure timely and
quality service of computer support to the University Services
Staff. This will include regularly scheduled discussions regarding
current and evolving issues and procedures.
Effectively deploy staff to resolve
issues to minimize service disruptions and maximize customer
service.
Maximize usage of ITSM Service Now
to ensure issues are effectively and efficiently resolved and to
build a knowledge base for staff that can be leveraged to minimize
service disruptions.
Implement technology that supports
effective digital communications for University Services, inclusive
of developing, in conjunction with department personnel, websites,
mobile applications and a social media presence that are easily
updated, efficient and effective, and the usage of which can be
easily measured. Make recommendations related to website updates
and ensure that all sites align with OIT standards.
In collaboration with OIT, direct
coding, testing, installation, debugging and documentation of
systems.
Ensure that staff within University
Services are adequately trained on all computer technology.

Strategic Planning

Direct the strategic planning and
budgeting of all computer and technological resources within
University Services.
In collaboration with the Office of
Information Technology (OIT), prepare and prioritize long and
short-range plans for applications selection, systems development,
systems maintenance, production activities and for necessary
support resources.
Develop and maintain a good
understanding of the business operations of the varying University
Services departments. Research and be aware of technologies and
system functionalities that are available in the market to support
these departments.
Make recommendations to University
Services Executive Team regarding system implementation to ensure
system deployments support business operations, maximize
efficiencies, optimize system capabilities and support a robust
data analytics program.
Review and prioritize systems
development requests and actively steward departmental systems and
software development activities to ensure that they are implemented
effectively.
Assess the technology and
recommendations for system solutions, along with execution of
implementations.
Plan and coordinate multiple
project schedules and related activities, from inception through
project completion, including but not limited to preparation of
proposal to the Strategic Advisory Group on IT (“SAGIT”),
contracting with vendor, planning and implementation. Develop
process to ensure all relevant information technology staff are
engaged in the project.
Represent University Services
departments through OIT’s architectural security review
process.
Maintain knowledge of the
University’s IT initiatives and infrastructure and advise
University Services departments accordingly.

Relationship
Management

Develop and maintain relationships
with central OIT staff to ensure University Services departments
are knowledgeable of OIT priorities and initiatives and that OIT
provides necessary support of technology deployed within each
University Services department.
Maintain relationships with all
vendors that provide technology to University Services departments.
Raise and resolve all issues as they occur. Make recommendations
related to statements of work (SOW) and Service Level Agreements
(SLA).
Create and maintain relationships
with IT staff who support units outside of University Services,
(i.e. – Facilities, Campus Life, Office of the Dean of the College,
etc.). Ensure communications occur related to system use,
implementation and upgrades, etc. Identify areas where system
functionalities overlap and work to ensure all systems are
implemented in the most effective and efficient manner. Facilitate
cross-departmental access to data.
Communicate information related to
IT systems, initiatives, projects and priorities to senior leaders
within University Services on a regular basis.

Data Analytics

Lead University Services’ efforts
to create and support a data analytics infrastructure that can be
used to set departmental goals, evaluate results, improve decision
making, and gain real time insight into University Services
operations.
Identify areas where efficiencies
can be gained through process automation and facilitate
implementation.
Work with the Office of Information
Technology to ensure that strategies related to data analytics are
aligned and the technological infrastructure supports cross
departmental data analytics.
Collaborate with University
departments on issues related to cross-departmental data
access.
Oversee development of tools and
visualizations that provide senior leaders with accurate and
current information.
Advised campus colleagues and
represent University Services on data issues related to selection
and development of systems.

Supervision

In addition to daily oversight,
supervise and manage a staff of four direct reports by providing
clarification, direction and prioritization, professional
development opportunities and evaluating overall performance. IT
staff that are embedded in University Services departments will
have a dotted line reporting relationship to the Director.
Create within the department backup
support and expertise for technological solutions that are deployed
within all University Services departments.

Other

Actively participate in
professional associations to stay informed of new developments in
field and hardware and software technology changes. Networking with
professional counterparts inside and outside the university will be
encouraged.
May be required to represent the
Executive Director at meetings and to provide guidance and
advisement to the staff on her behalf.
Attend regularly scheduled staff
meetings, committee assignments, staff development
opportunities.
Provide and create a work
environment that supports the Diversity and Inclusion efforts of

COMPLEX TASKS:
The successful candidate must be a
strategic thinker who is flexible and adaptive to the evolving
needs of University Services, able to work autonomously and with
initiative, and be adept at problem solving. The Director must
interact effectively with individuals at all levels within and
outside the University, and possess the judgment and discretion
needed to handle confidential information. The Director must
possess excellent management, analytical, and customer service
skills. He/she will assess the needs of staff, clients, and
customers and will work with the appropriate University Services
departments to assure that expectations are met. The Director will
make recommendations to senior staff on short and long-term
computing initiatives as well as decide how to organize workflow
and procedures to most efficiently expedite the requests of the
staff of University Services.

The Director must be able to collaborate,
establish credibility and build relationships with senior
leadership and constituents. The Director must be able to balance a
heavy workload and work effectively with a varied group of people.
The Director must also be able to handle multiple tasks on a daily
basis while overseeing staff members.

DECISIONS:

The Director will need to make independent
management and procedural decisions based on established University
policies which will impact the department and the campus community.
These decisions must be collaborative in nature and ensure that the
department is functioning at an optimum level and in
compliance.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS:
MINIMUM REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS
& EXPERIENCE:

Bachelor’s degree in computer
science or a related field or discipline, or an equivalent
combination of education and/or experience that demonstrates
comprehensive knowledge and understanding of information technology
management principles and practices.
Minimum of 6 years of relevant
professional experience in computing and personnel management,
preferably in an academic setting.
Experience managing servers,
networks and wireless security
Excellent communication, public
speaking and computer literacy skills.
Knowledge of administering
heterogeneous computing environments ranging from servers and
network to personal computers.
Demonstrated leadership and project
management experience including ability to manage personnel and
budgets.
Ability to take initiative to keep
departments current in latest technology and university IT policies
to ensure that the departments remains at the cutting edge in
technology advances
Ability to handle long-term planning
and budgeting to ensure resources are efficiently and effectively
deployed
Ability to conceptualize and
implement ways to achieve economies of scale in staffing, hardware,
and software purchases.
Ability to anticipate problems,
changes to be made and to advise the University Services executive
team on major issues/purchases/plans in IT.
