The Princeton Public Library, located in the heart of Princeton, Indiana, is a small, independent library serving 11,864 residents, and all of North Gibson School Corporation with a staff of 13. The library is open 64 hours a week Our library has been part of the community for over 100 years, starting as a Carnegie Library in 1905. Princeton Public Library is proud to be reciprocal with all of Gibson County libraries, along with being an Evergreen member with access all Evergreen Libraries across Indiana.

Located about 30 miles north of Evansville, we are proud to have Toyota Motor Manufacturing of Indiana in our community. They have been an important supporter of our community.

The Director reports to the appointed seven-member Board of Library Trustees.

Mission Statement: The mission of the Princeton Public Library is to enable all citizens of the community to improve their quality of life by providing opportunities for lifelong learning and recreational experiences.

Library Director

The Library Director has the main leadership role in our library. Typical duties include preparing and overseeing the budget, developing employment and service policies, strategic planning, public and governmental relations, reporting to the board of trustees, ensuring compliance with laws, fundraising, hiring, motivating and firing staff, and more.

In our small library the director handles everything from locking the doors to paying the bills. Please see an expanded list of duties and responsibilities, below.

Education/Experience

In addition to the basic educational requirements needed for a career as a librarian (including a MLS, preferably from an ALA accredited program), applicants must be able to obtain a Librarian Certificate Level 2 from the Indiana State Library.Candidates for the library director should have a demonstrated interest in professional development through attending workshops, conferences and participation in continuing education. Ten years of experience as a librarian with five years of managerial or administrative experience is required.

Skills

In addition to the skills needed as a librarian, a library director employs management techniques effectively in directing, planning, organizing, staffing, coordinating, budgeting, and evaluating the library’s operation. Skills needed include:

• Excellent communication skills and organizational skills
• Ability to administer the activities of a public library and to supervise the work of others
• Ability to develop short and long term development plans and objectives
• Honest, punctual, and able to maintain confidentiality
• Maintains knowledge of standard library principles and practices; concepts of freedom of speech, copyrights, collection development, patron confidentiality, censorship, and other library ethical issues
• Proficiency with computers, Evergreen and other library software, and digital communications. Must have strong technical skills including Microsoft Office products, Google Drive, and an ability to teach skills to staff and patrons
• Thorough ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employers, staff and public

Duties and Responsibilities

• Customer service:
• Provides reference and reader’s advisory services to patrons as needed
• Ensures that all customers are greeted and helped in a polite and friendly manner. Promotes friendly, efficient and knowledgeable customer service

• Education:
• Keeps informed of current developments in the library field by attending workshops and professional meetings, and reading current literature
• Maintains membership in professional organizations
• Maintains contact with Evergreen Indiana to keep abreast of changes, updates, or modifications to the ILS system
• Maintain an awareness of all laws and regulations concerning libraries. Inform Board of any conflicts

• Financials:
• Deposits cash/checks as needed
• Ensures that library funds are expended in a manner that reflects the library’s goals and is within the budget authorized by the board of trustees, and that all financial records are kept as prescribed by the State Board of Accounts
• Accepts and acknowledges gifts of money and library materials
• Pursues and applies for grant money
• Prepares statistical reports to Library Board and State Library

• Library Management:
• Under the general direction of the board of trustees, the library director is responsible for the planning, implementation, supervision, and evaluation of all library services, programs and day-to-day operations
• Prepares, evaluates, and updates the short-term goals and objectives, Long Range Plan, Disaster Recovery Plan, Library Policies, and Internal Controls as needed and/or required by the Indiana State Library
• Develops and administers policies concerning library operations, budgets, and programs
• Purchases new equipment and furnishings and supervises maintenance of library building, equipment, and furnishings
• Prepares meeting agendas and materials, and participates in monthly Library Board of Trustees meetings.
• Have primary responsibility for developing print and non-print collections; including selection, organizing, maintaining, preserving, withdrawing, and disposing of materials
• Performs other related responsibilities as necessary such as circulation
• During a pandemic, perform other duties as assigned with alternative scheduling with online webinars, technology training, and at home short/long term projects with an executive stay-at-home order
• During a pandemic, management will assist in being in the building, as allowed, for limited hours, to maintain the business obligations of the library
• Evaluates the library collection, including databases, on a regular basis to determine if weeding or augmentation of a subject area is necessary
• Select and order books and materials to support our community adhering to standards with regard to our community.
• Ensures that the building and grounds are kept in a neat and orderly manner, and that repairs, maintenance, safety, and security are evaluated and maintained on a regular basis
• Ability to work flexible schedule including evenings and weekends as needed

• Meetings:
• Attends and participates in staff and other job-related meetings
• Cooperates with community groups and town officials to implement library services
• Speak before local groups
• Defends budget requests to local officials

• Supervise/Public Relations:
• Ability to administer the activities of a public library and to supervise the work of others
• Handles complaints in accordance with policy
• Recruits and recommends employment of library personnel; recommends promotions, transfers, or termination of staff
• Organizes, trains, assigns and evaluates personnel and volunteers
• Evaluates working conditions, salaries, and benefits annually and makes recommendations to the board
• Creates the monthly work schedule
• Oversees and approves scheduled use of library by outside groups
• Direct, educate, evaluate and supervise all library staff in a manner that promotes a team driven environment, while allowing natural leaders to rise
• Must present a positive professional appearance
