POSITION SUMMARY:
The Classroom Teacher-Outreach provides unique Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) opportunities for students (PK-12) and teachers that foster science literacy through enrichment programs that are aligned with county curriculum, Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), and MSDE Maryland College and Career Ready Standards (MCCRS) that engage, enrich, support and reinforce classroom instruction. The teacher provides and models best practices that promote teacher effectiveness in facilitating STEM instruction. The teacher also creates and sustains a productive work environment that fosters an ongoing dialog of collaboration and staff engagement in order to promote a strategic direction in meeting systemic expectations and organizational success, as well as preparing students for college and career-readiness resulting in success.
This is a PGCEA, Table A, 10-Month Position
Salary Range: $55,079 – $123,266

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
Working directly with schools to develop and implement programs that support the STEM/Science Literacy Standards as well as provide students with an opportunity to examine local, regional and global issues;
Develops, prepares, implements STEM programs and instructional materials;
Establishes goals and objectives consistent with appraisal of student needs, curriculum framework, and knowledge of human growth and development;
Selects and utilizes appropriate instructional strategies including, but not limited to lectures, group discussions, demonstrations, modeling and multimedia teaching aids to present subject matter to students;
Evaluates student progress using appropriate assessment techniques;
Maintains order and discipline in the classroom conducive to effective learning and takes all necessary safety precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities;
Creates a classroom environment that provides for student involvement in the learning process and enables each student to achieve learning objectives;
Attends and actively participates in staff/faculty meetings, collaborative planning and provides input regarding the planning of instructional goals, objectives and methods;
Writes grants that support the implementation of STEM/Science literacy in PGCPS;
Locates and shares helpful websites that provide information and support for teachers and students in the area of STEM education;
Works with outside organizations to develop greater collaboration with PGCPS as it relates to providing greater learning opportunities for students, teachers and administrators in the area of STEM/Science literacy;
Assists schools with the implementation of their on-site STEM projects and programs;
Conducts and assists with special programs and initiatives at the Howard B. Owens Science Center;
Develops and implements a comprehensive plan for PGCPS that addresses the state graduation requirement found in the science literacy standards;
Provides professional development for teachers and administrators in the area of STEM and science literacy;
Performs related work as required by the Program Administrator of Howard B. Owens Science Center, the Director for Academic Programs, and/or the Executive Director of Curriculum and Instruction; and
Performs other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
Demonstrates superior knowledge of pedagogy as it relates to best practices in science program implementation and development;
Thorough knowledge of MSDE Science Literacy Standards;
Knowledge of current trends in science education, including Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), Next Generation Science Standards; Common Core State Standards, and College, Career Ready Standards
Knowledge of websites that support STEM education;
Ability to relate positively with students, teachers, central office personnel and the general public;
Experience in operating standard office equipment and office software including database, spreadsheet, web page development, etc.;
Ability to communicate effectively both in written and oral form with diverse groups and populations; and
Possesses superior public speaking abilities.
EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s degree required in applicable field of education; course work or experience in STEM education, science, or space education preferred; Master’s degree preferred; minimum of three (3) years of successful teaching experience preferred.
CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
Holds or is eligible for a Professional Certificate appropriate to area of assignment issued by the Maryland State Department of Education ; Advanced Professional Certificate preferred
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
No direct supervisory responsibilities.

The physical demands are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job. While performing the duties of the job, the employee is frequently required to assist schools with STEM programs and projects. When at Howard B. Owens Science Center the employee may assist in the implementation of outdoor activities which may include walking of the campus. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, talk, hear, walk, sit and use fingers tools or controls. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision such as to read handwritten or typed material, the ability to adjust focus, and depth perception. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may occasionally push or lift up to 25 lbs.
