Position Summary:
The Philadelphia School seeks a strong educational leader with a demonstrated commitment to progressive education. The Division Director acts as the strategic and tactical educational leader for our lower grades and is responsible for day-to-day operations in those grades. The Division Director maintains the alignment between the school’s mission statement, strategic plan, and all activities of that division. He/She/They function as the chief articulator and upholder of the programs, practices, and behavioral guidelines for the lower grades.
As a member of the academic Program Team, the Division Director works collaboratively with the The Associate Head of School and Director of grades 4-8 to ensure programmatic and pedagogical continuity and cohesion across all grades and to set the pace, tone, and priorities for our learning community. The Division Director also works in close collaboration with the Director of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging, and the Director of Learning Resources.
The Division Director will:
co-create and implement best practice programs and initiatives that uphold progressive pedagogy and practice
evaluate the academic program for curricular clarity, cohesion, and alignment with benchmarks and school values
champion the school’s commitment to equity, outdoor education, and place based learning
consistently assess where the teachers are, what they need to move forward, and how to allocate resources to meet those needs
oversee and provide leadership to assigned faculty committees and conduct regular tactical and strategic meetings with faculty, individually and in teams, to build shared visions, support innovations, and problem solve concerns
work in conjunction with the Learning Resources team, teachers, and parents to develop plans to meet the educational, physical, social, and emotional needs of students.
make recommendations to the Associate Head of School and Head of School regarding the hiring, remediation, retention, and the assignment of faculty
supervise all classroom teachers in grades Preschool-3; support strong teaming and interdisciplinary collaboration
supervise specialist teachers who teach across multiple grades/divisions
Characteristics:
Excellent communication, leadership, organization, and collaboration skills
Experience coaching teachers
Demonstrated commitment to diversity and equity work
Experience in curriculum design/implementation
Deep knowledge of child development, especially early childhood
Understanding of and commitment to academic technology and integration
Experience in Google Apps for Education
Spanish fluency is a plus
Years of experience:
5-10 years of teaching experience required; 3-5 years of administrative experience preferred.
Educational background:
A minimum of a bachelor’s degree is required; a master’s degree in an education-related field is required.
