Software Development Engineer

We are seeking a Software Development Engineer to support and enhance our existing C++ software and to also develop an improved version of our software in a more modern platform which allows for greater UI control (C# has been recommended). We anticipate this being a full time 6-to-9-month project completed at our facility in Waukesha, WI with ongoing part time support provided remotely.

The existing source code is written in C++ and consists of 200,000+ lines. The program was originally developed 20 years ago and has been enhanced by multiple software developers over the years.

Our current program displays a live image on a 4K monitor through a 4.9MP camera and magnified by a microscope to measure different geometries: distances, angles, radius & diameter. The user can choose one of three methods to calculate geometries: 1) Screen: points are selected on the screen via a mouse and the calculation is made, 2) Scales: the users moves the cross hairs on the screen to specific points via a X & Y hand wheel and calculations are made based on the X & Y linear scales and 3) Edge Detection: an area of interest box is drawn around a feature via a mouse and the software defines the location of that features through an edge detection algorithm. In some cases during edge detection the feature is moved and images are layered 14 frames per second to determine the highest points.

Qualifications:

Previous experience in software engineering/development to include:

• Significant experience with C++, C#, Open CV and other programming languages
• Ability to troubleshoot issues through C++ debug

• Video image processing
• Deep understanding of edge detection algorithms with focus on defining geometries (angles, radius, diameters, distances)
• Noise filtration
• Effects of lighting on image quality

• Experience with microscopy
• Understanding of how different microscope magnifications affect size
• Understanding of how microscopes focus affects size

• Multi-thread, continual live feed encoder interface communication
• Video/API
• Hardware encoders
• Linear scales
• Magnetic Encoders
• Optical Encoder

• Familiarity with Microsoft Visual Studio (current complier)
• Experience with calibration process that incorporates depth of focus, screen image and linear scales for results to the micron level
• Familiarity with Microsoft Access database to store and apply offset and location data for accurate and repeatable results down to the micron level
• Strong analytical and critical thinking skills

Responsibilities:

• Analyze user/customer needs and existing software, improve current functionality and develop next generation user interface
• Recommend and implement software upgrades to optimize operational efficiency
• Collaborate with past developer to design and optimize code
• Create flowcharts and user guides for new and existing programs
• Document all programming tasks and procedures
• Perform routine software maintenance

Job Types: Full-time, Temporary, Contract

Pay: $6,000.00 – $12,000.00 per month
