Heriot-Watt University has a rich heritage and an established reputation as a leading research-led university and provider of education with five global campuses in the UK, Dubai and Malaysia alongside considerable on-line learning provision around the world.
The University is truly distinctive in its operationally integrated global structure, offering students access to education and research across the Group and unparalleled opportunities for mobility during their study and research. Heriot-Watt wishes to be a University in which its whole community flourishes, driven by its sense of purpose and demonstration of its values to belong, collaborate, inspire and celebrate.
The University is now seeking a Deputy Principal Education & Student Life to be based in Edinburgh, who will provide strategic leadership across the University’s foundation, undergraduate and master’s student experience and success at the University. The role is also a critical conduit to connect with wider aspects of student life working closely across our community of academic and professional service staff. Reporting to the Principal & Vice Chancellor, the Deputy Principal role is a full-time appointment for an initial (renewable) period of 5 years based in Edinburgh, in addition to being appointed on a full-time basis as a Professor of the University.
The Deputy Principal Education & Student Life will provide leadership to two Associate Deputy Principals and the Directors of the Learning & Teaching Academy. They will form close partnerships with the Global Academic Registrar, the Head of Academic Quality, the broader learning and teaching community, and the Global Chief Operating Officer and relevant professional service leads to develop optimal student experience.
Key priorities for the Deputy Principal Education & Student Life will be to develop Heriot-Watt’s global approach to course delivery, building on their recent re-framing of the academic architecture; enhance overall financial sustainability of the educational portfolio; more deeply integrate digital-first and online modes of delivery to harness the integration of on campus, online and blended modes; integrate learning analytics to drive a data-driven approach to enhancing the student journey; and to seize opportunities for philanthropic engagement to support scholarships and widen access to Heriot-Watt University. The Deputy Principal’s work will be underpinned by a strong sense of purpose and impact for Heriot-Watt’s students.
The ideal candidate will be an academic leader of professorial standing who has led sizeable and complex academic units. They will have an outstanding track record in educational delivery and leadership, be recognised by a sector body such as the Higher Education Academy/Advance HE, and Professional Institution(s) at Fellow level, and be accustomed to working in matrixed, multinational, multidisciplinary environments. A values-led approach to leadership with a multinational, team-oriented mindset will set the strongest candidates apart.
