Patterson-UTI Drilling Company has one of the largest and most technologically advanced fleets of drilling rigs in the United States and is actively interviewing in the Technical Services Department. The Hydraulic Controls Systems Technical Project Manager will be responsible for managing and supporting the Company’s rig hydraulic control systems, including the design, installation, service, and upgrade of systems across the Company’s fleet. This person will have experience with hydraulic system design, construction, drilling structural controls, and hydraulic equipment commissioning. He/she should have working knowledge of API 500 Recommended Practice for Classification of locations for Electrical Installations at Petroleum Facilities Classified as Class 1, Division 1 and Division 2. The Hydraulic Control Systems Technical Project Manager will be responsible for planning and executing a variety of hydraulic system projects to ensure they remain on schedule, within budget, and in compliance with industry-accepted design, HSE and Company standards.

The Hydraulic Controls Supervisor will be a key member of the Engineering and Asset Management team, and will work closely with Construction and Special Projects as well as regional Operations and Technical Services teams to oversee and support hydraulic systems projects. This person will act as the Company subject matter expert for hydraulic systems, will generate work scopes, qualify designs, manage third parties responsible for providing materials and services to complete work scopes, and ensure efficient execution of projects during major construction and fleet upgrades. The position works under the direction of the Manager, Structural Engineering.

Job Description

• Understand and influence Company’s strategic roadmap in developing and supporting rig hydraulic and hydraulic control systems
• Work with internal stakeholders and third parties to develop solutions and execute work scopes in alignment with Company goals
• Work with third-parties to develop and qualify the designs of hydraulic and hydraulic controls systems, including structural raising systems, rig walking systems, winch control systems, BOP handling systems, iron roughnecks, accumulators, catwalks, and other hydraulic systems typically installed on drilling rigs
• Work with Operations and Procurement to outline contractual work scopes with third-party vendors; complete technical and service quality qualification of vendors in the sourcing process
• Ensure drawings, source code[JH1] , bills of material including detailed parts lists, manuals, and other key deliverables are adequately provisioned in contracts; quality check deliverables as necessary throughout the course of projects
• Work directly with the Rig-Up Yard, Operations, and Technical Services teams to ensure their understanding of the overall hydraulic system design, commercial terms, and project plan prior to commencing work
• Assist with the development and execution of quality assurance processes to ensure vendors complete work scopes according to design and industry workmanship standards; complete onsite audits to ensure continuous compliance
• Develop solutions to replace obsolete equipment on working rigs; qualify solutions in the field
• Manage projects to rollout solutions across the fleet of rigs once qualified, including vendor qualification and selection process, negotiating contract terms, develop kits for field deployment, and communicate work scope to regional operations and technical services teams
• Follow Company’s change management process to develop technical documentation, release work orders, track and report on progress of upgrades across the fleet
• Assist Operations, Technical Services, and Procurement to qualify regional hydraulic service and parts suppliers
• Develop detailed maintenance work scopes and procedures for all hydraulic equipment, including operational, technical, and depot level maintenance
• Lead risk assessments, FMEA, and root cause analysis relevant to hydraulic systems; Use findings to develop or refine planned maintenance and design standards, specifications, and methods
• Direct operational and logistical efforts to efficiently and safely install complex and highly technical equipment in a time-sensitive, 24/7 operation
• Troubleshoot and resolve problems on the fly, assess severity and impact of issues that arise and take action to effectively communicate potential business and project impact when necessary
• Coordinate training for rig crews to effectively understand how to operate, maintain, and troubleshoot newly installed equipment
• Work with the Controls and Automation Department to design solutions to communicate with hydraulic control systems, including accumulators, catwalks and iron roughnecks
• Liaise between Asset Managers and Controls and Automation Department to develop solutions to interface hydraulic system controls into the rig control system

• Ability to safely navigate drilling rig work sites including regular walking, climbing, standing, stepping, etc. during various weather conditions (day/night, outdoor hot/cold weather)
• Ability to read hydraulic and electrical schematics
• Ability to proficiently use MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, Power Point, Project etc.)
• Physical ability to:
• Lift and carry 50 pounds independently while walking on uneven surfaces
• Bend, stoop, kneel, twist, and crawl occasionally during visits to field and operational work areas
• Listen for unusual noises that signify equipment and or machinery problems
• Stay alert and focused including during occasional extended work periods
• Maintain spatial orientation and awareness to safely move around work environment with many moving objects including overhead machinery
• Immediately respond to emergency situations
• Wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) at all designated time
• Ability to regularly travel as needed to visit work sites and support business units; may require extended travel to remote locations and/or overnight stay(s) outside normal office area
• Ability to work on weekends and be on call after hours as needed

Minimum Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED
• 5+ years’ experience in designing and supporting industrial hydraulic control systems for land drilling rigs
• Previous experience in the construction and commissioning of drilling rig equipment
• Working knowledge and understanding of API 500 Recommended Practice for Classification of locations for Electrical Installations at Petroleum Facilities Classified as Class 1, Division 1 and Division 2
• Eligible to drive Company or personal vehicle for Company purposes including ability to meet requirements of Company’s Vehicle Use Agreement and Driving Policy

Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree in a related field of study
• Ability to create hydraulic and electrical schematics in ACAD
• Ability to read logic for design qualification and troubleshooting

Additional Details

This position requires the person to be able to work in a time sensitive, high visibility role and regularly travel as needed to support business units and to visit work sites. It may also require extended travel to remote locations and/or overnight stay(s) during variable hours. Variable work hours include hours worked on the weekend, on holidays, and hours to travel within and outside of the assigned region. The Engineer must work with an emphasis on planning, multitasking, and prioritization to maximize efficiency of the team. Must be able to work closely with others and manage customer interaction in a professional manner. Ability to safely navigate work sites with occasional walking, climbing, standing, stepping, working at heights, etc., during normal operating conditions (day/night, outdoor hot/cold weather) and while utilizing designated personal protective equipment (PPE).
