Overview

At a time when complex environmental problems are emerging on every front, the Nuclear Sciences Division’s staff, capabilities, and facilities are delivering science and technology innovations for the environment, as well as for energy and national security needs. Our diverse work addresses a wide range of national and international challenges, from providing solutions that protect the health of people who must work in hazardous environments, to developing durable new materials, streamlining industrial processes for improved productivity and effectiveness, and delivering new approaches for environmental cleanup. Nuclear Sciences Division capabilities and efforts are focused in three key areas including Environmental Health and Remediation, Nuclear Regulatory, and Nuclear Energy.

Responsibilities

The Materials Dynamics Team within the Reactor Materials Group is seeking a postdoctoral researcher with expertise in computational materials science. The postdoc will work on developing complex computational models to simulate processes related to advanced manufacturing. The successful candidate will be part of a team of researchers working on the modeling of material behavior during solid phase processes such as friction extrusion, friction stir welding and processing, and cold spray.
The selected candidate will support federally funded research programs in advanced manufacturing and materials design at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. The postdoc is expected to work independently, publish scientific findings in high-impact peer-reviewed journals, and present research findings at professional conferences.
The position is available immediately with an initial assignment for 24 months and can be extended up to 36 months dependent upon performance and available funding.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Candidates must have received a PhD within the past five years (60 months) or within the next 8 months from an accredited college or university.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Ph.D. in materials science, mechanical engineering, metallurgy, manufacturing, or related field.
  • Experience in particle-based methods such as Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) and Discrete Element Method (DEM)
  • Advanced skills in meso-scale modeling techniques (Crystal Plasticity and/or Phase Field)
  • Deep understanding of material design and advanced manufacturing
  • Clear understanding about microstructural features and its role on properties.
  • Advanced programing skills using Matlab and Python
