At Oxford Quantum Circuits (OQC) we build quantum computers to enable life-changing discoveries: from new drug modelisation to longer-lasting battery technology and portfolio optimisation. We have launched Europe’s first Quantum Computing as a Service (QCaaS) – to bring quantum to our customers’ fingertips and help them improve their operations and trailblaze new commercial and scientific approaches.

Our team is composed of 45 people with various backgrounds in quantum physics, nanotechnologies, hardware, software and business operations from marketing to intellectual property. We are all bound by the desire to put OQC at the forefront of the quantum revolution and help solve some of the world’s most challenging problems.

ROLE OVERVIEW*
As a junior software engineer at OQC, you will join a team of physicists and software engineers developing a range of amazing software solutions. As a junior member you will be fully integrated into the team, working alongside a more senior team of engineers and physicists. This is a fantastic opportunity for a driven and enthusiastic engineer/physicist to learn the full development lifecycle while contributing to cutting-edge UK based quantum computing technology. You will be provided with opportunities for skills development and mentoring in a broad range of subjects. You will be able to make full use of your problem solving and analytical skills to develop high-performance software solutions to enable OQC’s quantum hardware technologies.

RESPONSIBILITIES*

• Develop high-quality software in a novel field, applying solid engineering practices
• Identify, prioritise and execute tasks in the software development life cycle ensuring critical milestones are met
• Collaborate with internal teams creating software tools to aid with research and development
• Work with external stakeholders and partners on important projects
• Maintain and develop qpu simulators

REMUNERATION
Circa £28,000 pa., based on experience.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS*

• Completed Masters or Bachelors degree with first class (or predicted) in either Physics, Mathematics, Computer science or other STEM fields.
• Working knowledge of Python and scientific Python libraries
• Strong problem solving, troubleshooting and analysis skills
• A working knowledge of object oriented programming
• Ability to work in a team environment filling roles as required
• Enthusiasm for taking on new challenges you may have no prior experience in
• Ability to deliver solutions to complex problems against time commitments

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS

• Understanding of quantum information theory
• Familiarity with a systems programming language such as C/C++/Rust
• Experience of web application development
• Experience of database development
• Industrial experience developing software considered highly desirable

LOCATION & TRAVEL
OQC’s office is located in Shinfield, Reading. There will be a requirement for occasional travel throughout the UK and elsewhere abroad for conferences, meetings and engineering visits.
