Orpyx develops sensor-based wearable solutions to prevent diabetic foot complications. We are an ISO 13485 company committed to providing quality medical devices that consistently meet customer needs and regulatory requirements. Orpyx® SI Sensory Insole System is comprised of sensor-embedded custom insoles used to empower people with diabetes to extend mobility by preventing dreaded diabetes-related complications such as foot ulcers and amputation. The sensory insoles send feedback to an app-based display, alerting the wearer in real-time of dangerous plantar pressures, enabling them to adjust behaviour immediately to help prevent damage from occurring. The sensory data is uploaded to the Orpyx SI cloud-based dashboard where the data can be remotely monitor between care visits. Our business model is a combination of medical device sales and SaaS (software-as-a-service) and meets the requirements for HCPCS and CPT reimbursement.

The Position
Reporting to the Vice President, Research and Development, the Mechanical Engineer will work as part of a cross functional R&D team providing Mechanical Engineering design support. This multi-faceted role is responsible for design, integration, material qualification, durability and reliability testing, Finite Element Analysis (FEA) simulation and manufacturing support.
The Mechanical Engineer is responsible for:
Producing mechanical designs (parts, and assemblies) of electronic components, enclosures and other mechanical and electro-mechanical systems
Developing and maintaining CAD Models of existing and future product including the creation and maintenance of technical drawings for the purpose of manufacturing in both R&D and Production settings
Prototyping and building your designs, working your hands, hand tools, power tools, CNC and 3D printing equipment will be part of your day-to-day
Working with Operations, Team Leads and Product Management to ensure that mechanical designs meet specifications and requirements
Preparing clear and concise specifications and requirements for mechanical design projects
Preparing and maintaining assembly work instructions, design plans, design reports and other documentation as required
Collecting, maintaining and analyzing data
Investigating failed units, performing root cause analysis and providing findings and recommendations to the team in a clear and concise manner
Designing and building tools, jigs and test fixtures
Evaluating various manufacturing technologies, techniques and materials for suitability, durability, and potential integration into the Orpyx production or contract manufacturing environment
Perform FEA simulations, where applicable
Creating tools and equipment for validation and verification for both the R&D group and the production team
Maintain a clean, and safe working environment
Perform duties in a manner that is consistent with and committed to upholding the requirements of the quality management system
Additionally, due to the ever-changing and sometimes chaotic environment of an early-stage high-tech company, the Mechanical Engineer may assume additional responsibilities, as required.
Qualifications
Minimum B.Sc. or higher in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Design or a related degree
P.Eng. preferred, open to Engineer in Training. Please note for EITs the position will named in accordance with APEGA’s naming requirements.
5+ years’ experience in a related Mechanical Engineer design role
Demonstrated experience with CAD design tools, preferably Solidworks or Fusion 360
Proven experience with CAM tools, preferably Mach 3, Mach 4, Fusion360, MasterCam, or GibsCam
Demonstrated work experience in an automated/manual assembly, and manufacturing processes environment is an asset
Knowledge of ISO 13485 is an asset
Demonstrated ability to analyze processes for continuous improvement
Knowledge of health/medical device industries, and related product development lifecycle is a bonus
Brings creative energy to the development and execution of projects.
Is a self-starter with strong communication and interpersonal skills
Excellent problem-solving skills, technical, and analytical abilities
Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively with teams
Strong time management and organizational skills with the ability to prioritize and manage own workload whilst multi-tasking in order to meet deadlines
Ability to maintain a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail
Is a pragmatic perfectionist
Must thrive in a start-up, fast-paced, ever-changing work environment and be comfortable navigating the “grey”
Schedule: Full-time, 40 hours per week from Monday to Friday. Peaks and valleys may be required periodically, depending on operational needs.
